The main reasons that make ferret an important neurodevelopmental animal model are:
1)Similarly to primates, ferret has an expanded and folded neocortex with a diversity of proliferative neural stem and progenitor cells. 2/
2)It’s brain development is protracted into postnatal period making it more accessible to manipulation.
3)Ferret shows important similarities to human immune response, making it a suitable model for various pathological conditions. 3/
In our review we outline the mean features of the ferret neocortex development with special emphasis on neural stem and progenitor cells, neuronal migration, cortical folding and development of cortical areas. 4/
We further list the main techniques used to manipulate the neocortex development in ferrets and finally discuss the suitability of ferret to model pathophysiology of various neurological diseases. 5/5
