The cicadas are coming to several eastern states in the U.S. this May/June, and whether you're ready or not, your yard is about to get millions of Brood X visitors. Here is how to protect your yard and home this cicada season 👇
Make sure you’re using lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, and leaf blowers at the right times. Cicadas may gravitate towards the loud buzzing that a lawn mower makes, so plan to do yard work in the early morning or at dusk when it’s cooler to avoid cicadas swarming.
Use garden netting to cover your trees, bushes, and flowers to protect them from cicada eggs. Make sure your garden nets are properly secured around the trunk of the tree and fit securely around it. Don't forget to let the branches hang in their natural position 🌳.
Since cicadas can potentially damage young trees and plants when laying their eggs, avoid planting any new trees before the emergence. Save your new plantings for the fall 🍂.
Save money and time by avoiding the use of pesticides. There will literally be billions of cicadas emerging for such a short period of time (four to six weeks), and using pesticide could be harmful to other insects.
Clean those deceased cicadas with a shovel, rake, or similar tool to gather them into piles and bury them in a hole in your yard. You can also transfer them to an outside garbage for pickup or you can add them to your compost. Oh, don't forget to check your gutters btw
