We represent a group of students who attend the University of Victoria (UVic), and are concerned by our school’s ableist and elitist plan for Fall 2021. 🧵 1/9
UVic says there will be no social distancing within classrooms, and full dormitory capacities. The university expects students to stay home when sick, without a plan for structural supports to keep coursework accessible. 2/9
Universal online access to course materials, lectures, and necessary class resources are still needed in September. Without these hybrid options, disabled students will once again be disproportionately affected by systemic barriers within higher ed. 3/9
There is no other way about it. By returning to solely in-person delivery of classes, UVic is actively dismantling equitable education. They are reinforcing a harmful and pervasive rhetoric that University is only for the privileged few. 4/9
The removal of flexible learning options will not only affect disabled folks. It will also impact lower-income students who cannot afford an extra 2-4 weeks accommodations to quarantine, in addition to the current housing crisis. 5/9
UVic only has plans to return back online on an emergency basis which tells all communities who have been most violently impacted by this pandemic, that our health and safety do not matter until we are already suffering. 6/9
UVic is reinforcing an ableist narrative that removes agency from its community members while simultaneously breaking its own commitment to an equitable campus. 7/9
How many decision makers fall at the intersections of the identities UVic is so quick to exclude? And those disproportionately impacted by COVID overall? It is clear that no disabled or otherwise made vulnerable folks were consulted while creating this plan. 8/9
