🧵Still thinking about the bigger barns thing. It would be helpful if people actually read the story:
Luke 12:15 - " Then [Jesus] said to them, Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” 1/
I mean, yes greed is a part of the problem, but Jesus explicitly states that "abundance of possessions" is directly tied to that. 2/
The problem is that we human beings never reach a point of having "enough." Enough is never enough. 3/
So, instead of having enough, we store up and store up forever and ever. You can go through the whole bible and see where the act of storing up is the fundamental problem 4/
Pharaoh and his "store cities," the Israelites who can't help but try and store more than 1 day's worth of mana, Solomon and his store cities (1 Kings 9:19), and etc... Consistently "storing up" is an activity associated with all sorts of sin and evil.
One of the truly consistent themes in all of scripture is that one should not even try to play this game of "storing up." The people are commanded to trust that God will provide enough. 6/
This is a much more precarious lifestyle and we humans don't like it (we long for the fleshpots of Egypt). Yet, God also warns us that "storing up" will not lead to anything other than death. There is no new life that way 7/
And, to be clear, Churches are REALLY BAD at this. We store up things ALL THE TIME. We store up money, history, nostalgia, almost anything really. 8/
So, I have no creative way to end this other than to say I suggest we head Jesus' warning. Storing up is the problem and that activity cannot be cleanly separated form greed. 9 & end/
