Ok, so maybe you heard that Republicans are going to try to eliminate 280 proposals from the budget AND prevent debate on them. Let’s talk about what some of those policies are, and what they might mean for ordinary Wisconsinites. A thread! 1/n
One policy on the list for elimination would create statewide standards for toxic, cancer-causing chemicals in our drinking water. Too many communities in Wisconsin are already suffering from contamination of their drinking water. 2/n
The governor’s budget would set a cap on copayments for insulin, a drug that diabetics rely on to survive. Republicans want to throw that out, among a bunch of other provisions on lowering prescription drug costs for Wisconsinites. 3/n
Republicans also want to get rid of legal cannabis. Aside from the direct effects of legalizing recreational and medical marijuana, the budget would have taxed it and used the revenue to invest in the communities that have suffered under over-policing and the war on drugs. 4/n
BadgerCare expansion... This is a big one. Under the Governor’s budget, Wisconsin would receive $1.6 billion in federal money and newly cover tens of thousands of residents. All of that cash could be used to invest in our public schools, rural broadband, or small businesses. 5/n
Republicans are also saying no to a raise for low-wage workers. The governor’s budget would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10.15 per hour by 2024. $7.25 is not a living wage, and it's long past time to increase it. 6/n
LITERALLY ANYTHING EQUITY RELATED. IF IT SAYS EQUITY OR INVESTS IN MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES, REPUBLICANS WANT IT GONE 7/n
And those are just a few of the provisions that they want to get rid of. We could be cleaning up the water we drink, lowering the costs of life-saving prescription drugs, and raising wages for workers. Republicans are saying NO to all of that. 8/n
If any of those things sound good to you, you're not alone. The whole reason Republicans want to use this loophole to stifle debate on these issues, is because they know these policies are popular and effective. If it was a battle of ideas, they know they'd lose. 9/n
Some of the leaders that govern in our name aren't interested in making our lives better, just stopping progress and then trying to blame the Governor. Worse still, they're trying to avoid being held accountable for voting against our well-being by blocking debate. 10/n
If you made it to the end of this thread and you’re as mad as we are, call your legislators at 1-800-362-9472 and let them know that you support the #BadgerBounceBack Budget. Together we can make life better for Wisconsinites. 11/11
