Students asked us for more volunteer opportunities, so we made it happen — the Martlet is now recruiting summer volunteers! Volunteers will get one-on-one mentorship, ample training, and access to our workshops with local journalists.
In the last 74 years, the Martlet has served as a launchpad for careers in media. Martlet writers have freelanced for the Globe and Mail, the Tyee, the New York Times, and CBC. They have also been paid for freelance work at @CapitalDailyVic — a new local longform journalism site.
Although we can't guarantee a summer volunteer spot will land you in the Times, you will gain practice with pitching, interviewing, and crafting stories. Writers will be encouraged to work towards publishing three stories in the Martlet by the end of the summer
No experience is required, and there is no set time commitment. Our Editor-in-Chief @katekorte will guide you through the process and mix in some fun.

It will be like a summer camp, except with adults and journalism.
To express your interest, e-mail Kate at by May 7!

NEW: Today we're breaking down UVic and the B.C. government's latest update on the fall semester. Here are the key points in B.C.'s Return-to-Campus primer:
-vaccine not mandatory
-residence will be full capacity, or close to it
-non-medical masks may still be required, dependent on transmission
-no physical distancing in classes, eg 150 students can be in a lecture hall with 150 seats
-students are going to be asked to sit in the same seat every class
-anyone with symptoms should stay home
-although they anticipate federal travel restrictions will still be in place, students entering to study should be permitted
-international students can get the vaccine in Canada (even without Service Card/MSP)
