Her brutal murder has changed the way Justice is pursued in Puerto Rico. There was no prosecutor present when Andrea Ruiz Costa went before a judge for a probable cause hearing asking the judge to jail her ex-boyfriend because she feared for her safety amid alleged threats by him
The judge denied her justice and found no probable cause. Her ex-boyfriend murdered her a month later, according to police. He has allegedly confessed to the crime.
What Andrea was denied every alleged victim will be granted from this point forward: a prosecutor by their side at every domestic violence probable cause hearing. Because the people of Puerto Rico rose up and demanded change, Andrea has changed the world for the better.
May her memory be a blessing.

After the Puerto Rico justice system was exposed for failing Andrea Ruiz Costas, a judge has now ordered the probable cause hearing sealed so the public can’t see it. That’s the hearing where Andrea asked a judge to jail her ex boyfriend but the judge found no probable cause.
The head of the Supreme Court has acknowledged that enough was not done for Andrea. The attorney general on the island has acknowledged enough was not done for Andrea. The governor has acknowledged that the system failed Andrea. So why not release the hearing?
Puerro Rico’s attorney general supports the release of the 2 zoom hearings where Andrea requested a restraining order from a judge as well as the hearing where she asked a second judge to find probable cause to arrest her ex boyfriend.

• Andrea was left to defend herself in front of the judge without a prosecutor present
•Shortly after the judge found no probable cause to arrest the ex Andrea went back to the first judge and asked that her restraining order request be withdrawn
