THREAD: After a series of complaints over aggressive driving and street racing, CMPD began an aggressive driving operation that led to more than 50 cars being seized. [A few pictured below]
CMPD identified several individuals who gathered in various locations around #Charlotte and engaged in dangerous, high-speed street races.
On the morning of May 6, 2021, CMPD conducted a regional round-up for these individuals and their vehicles, one of the largest of its kind.
These vehicles were a part of an organized national trend of sports car enthusiasts known as ‘Hooning.’
Hooning is defined as groups of motorists engaging in aggressive and reckless driving in the form of burn outs, donuts, intersection and highway takeovers in addition to both spontaneous and pre-arranged street racing.
CMPD’s enforcement efforts took place over a six-month period. It led to more than 2,500 traffic stops that included 3,500 violations.
These violations include: Nearly 2,100 Speeding Violations, 400 Reckless Driving Violations, 32 DWI Violations, 10 Spontaneous Racing Violations and more than 1,000 other charges that were filed.
CMPD hopes this will operation will discourage engagement in this type of activity. We will remain vigilant in our enforcement on organized aggressive driving.
Approximately 300 individuals will soon be receiving a warning letter from @cmpdchief Johnny Jennings detailing the types of charges they could face if they continue to engage in these dangerous and reckless activities.
These charges include but are not limited to: Aggressive & Reckless driving and unlawful racing on streets and highways.
