@andyweirauthor The classic science fiction from the 1950’s are good books but you have to read them with an understanding of the time they were written. Like “wow here we are in space, now time for the women to go do the dishes”. Its like, no. #TheSpacePolicyShow

@andyweirauthor At the time The Martian was written we believed Mars was just an arid wasteland. Look how rapidly we are learning things about Mars. People don’t understand how much we still don’t know. We are just scratching the surface. #TheSpacePolicyShow

@andyweirauthor When I start writing I usually start with the technology. For Project Hail Mary I started with daydreaming about what cool stuff could we do if we could turn mass energy into light and get beyond the “tyranny of the rocket equation”. #TheSpacePolicyShow

@andyweirauthor Tips for budding sci-fi authors: 1) In order to be a writer, you have to write – research & world-building still need a storyline. 2) Resist the urge to tell your story to your friends and family. 3) The best time to self-publish is right now. #TheSpacePolicyShow

Weir: Project Hail Mary uses real technology not done yet like on-orbit assembly of large spacecrafts & using centrifuge for artificial gravity. Completely made up physics like containing neutrinos. Most readers aren’t physicists so they can still enjoy it. #TheSpacePolicyShow

@ChicInSpace Our recent paper discusses space & art from its early days to more recently a mosaic of pictures on NASA’s Space X launch. Sci-fi has been a part of our culture for decades. What kind of influence do art/ entertainment have on real space activity? #TheSpacePolicyShow

@andyweirauthor There’s more of an upsurgence of interest in space now so that makes sci-fi like The Martian popular. Entertainment doesn’t drive science, awesome science makes people more interested in corresponding entertainment. #TheSpacePolicyShow
