Abia Commissioner for Information, Chief Okiyi Kalu, has confirmed the abduction of some students of the Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu Okigwe by gunmen.

Kalu stated that government had yet to establish the number and identity of the affected students, adding that two students escaped from the attack.
The statement also stated that the victims were returning to the campus in a mini-bus between 7pm and 8pm, when the vehicle ran into the hoodlums.

“Two of the students managed to escape from the hoodlums, while others are still being held at a yet-to-be identified location.
“We are working with the government of Imo and relevant security agencies in both states to ensure the rescue of the abducted students and others.
“Members of the public and university community are advised to remain calm as we will spare no resources in ensuring the safety of the victims.
“No criminal operating within our environment will be allowed to escape justice as we take the job of protecting lives and property of Abia residents and visitors very seriously,” Kalu stated.

It further said that the university authorities were still monitoring the development.

There were also media reports that schools in the Bwari area of Abuja shut down on Wednesday over alleged arrival of truckloads of bandits in a neighbouring town, Sabon Wuse.
It was also learnt that Veritas University, Abuja, owned by the Catholic Church, which is located in Bwari, had sent its students home.
It has been reported that security was beefed up at the main gate of Abacha Barracks.

A video currently circulating on Twitter, courtesy of Sahara reporters, has caught the attention of the Nigeria Customs Service, alleging that Customs Personnel collect N5000 from smugglers.

In a statement by Deputy National PRO of Customs, Timi Bomodi, he stated that, upon a review of said video, no Customs Personnel was sighted throughout nor evidence of collection of money in said video.
However, he further stated that the Service is willing to accept reports regarding unprofessional conduct, with a view to deal with the culprits.
