Here’s how wrong you have to be to get a show on Fox. Larry Kudlow through the years, a thread ...
Kudlow in 1993: “There is no question that President Clinton’s across-the-board tax increases … will throw a wet blanket over the recovery.” (There was an 8-year expansion.) 1/6
Kudlow in June 2002: “A small war … can get the job done. All-out war mobilization is unnecessary. Iraq will fall with much less.” (100,000+ total deaths over a decade-plus, including 4,400+ U.S. military deaths and 31,900+ wounded) 2/6
Kudlow in December 2007: “There is no recession. In fact, we are about to enter the seventh consecutive year of the Bush boom.” (The Great Recession began that month.) 3/6
Kudlow in June 2018: "The deficit … is coming down – and it's coming down rapidly.” (It skyrocketed.) 4/6
Kudlow in February 2020: "We have contained this [coronavirus], I won’t say airtight but pretty close to airtight." (580,000 U.S. deaths later, still wrong.) 5/6
Kudlow in April 2021: "No burgers on July 4. … You can throw back a plant-based beer with your grilled Brussels sprouts and wave your American flag.” (No, Larry. Biden isn’t banning burgers. And beer already is plant-based.) 6/6

I’ve been thinking about how birtherism – a lie about Barack Obama’s citizenship – consolidated right-wing conspiracy nuts into a potent political force. I was an editor at the Chicago Tribune when it bubbled up in 2008, and I was assigned to edit a story on the subject. 1/7
I initially resisted the idea of us writing about birtherism at all. It was obvious BS. If you were plotting a government takeover, would you put all your chips on a Kenyan-born black guy with a funny name and then fake a birth certificate for him in Hawaii? I mean, come on. 2/7
But I followed orders. The word had come down from on high that we should examine birtherism in our pages. I was told that we needed to give our readers the facts and not look like we were part of some cover-up. “Sunlight is a disinfectant” and all that. 3/7

An NPR host asked a reporter why William Barr said such scary and authoritarian things, and the reporter speculated that Barr wanted to “get a rise” out of his critics. No, it’s because he’s authoritarian. NPR's calm, tea-sipping normalization is part of the problem.
I'm an ex-journalist. I know that when reporters say the president and attorney general are taking unprecedented actions that threaten our democracy, they may come across as partisan. But if they don't tell the truth with appropriate urgency, they're failing as journalists.
Part of the problem for NPR is that their style is cozy couch with a steaming cup of tea and a croissant. If they were reporting on an asteroid hurtling toward Earth to extinguish all life forms, they probably wouldn't raise their voices. They would normalize the asteroid.

If you’re wondering why the right wing lies all the time these days, here’s an answer: It’s part of their tradition. In an episode largely lost to history, conservative icon William F. Buckley and his National Review forged documents for political purposes and got caught in 1971.
2/ Ticked off because NYT and WaPo revealed the Pentagon Papers showing the U.S. lied about the Vietnam War, Buckley created fake documents showing the need to continue the war. The hoax crumbled and Buckley admitted the papers were produced “ex nihilo” – out of nothing.
3/ Asked whether the hoax hurt the National Review’s credibility, Buckley said it “enhances our analytical credibility.”
Makes you wonder whether Buckley and Kellyanne Conway were ever seen in the same room.

I’m with the Remove Trump “Swarm the Capitol” demonstration in DC. Protests have long been banned on Capitol Hill — no signs, no chants, no singing. So we’re starting with hundreds of people “swarming” the atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building.
Remove Trump organizers planned a “silent formation” at the Hart Senate building, but Capitol Police said any lining up would be an illegal protest. So we’re milling around instead, since that’s deemed legal. There are hundreds of us, some obscured by the Calder sculpture.
Capitol Police have a duffel bag full of plastic handcuffs at the ready here at the Hart Senate Office Building, but these protesters are peaceful patriots. Unlike Trump, they know how to behave.

Just because he took a Sharpie to a weather map to show a nonexistent hurricane threat doesn’t mean he’d lie about an extortion scheme in Ukraine, right?
Just because he lied to us about paying hush money to a porn star doesn’t mean he’d lie about a Ukraine extortion plot, right?
Just because he lied to us about secret negotiations in Russia during the 2016 campaign doesn’t mean he’d lie to us about secret negotiations in Ukraine during the 2020 campaign, right?
