the second revision of the Graphics Gremlin just arrived! time to assemble it.
my solder paste technique is definitely not @GregDavill quality but it'll do.
lots of parts to go
still more. mostly passives now.
ready for baking!
getting baked.
a bit laggy on the reflow profile
ok the solder mask got very discolored. never seen this before, particularly the streaks
got the through-hole parts soldered. also cleaned up a few solder bridges. sadly i could not find the RCA jack in stock anywhere. oh well.
here goes nothing
oh sweet, it totally works!

picked up this absolute beast of a hard drive. this is the Maxtor XT-2190! it stores 160MB when formatted. this was huge for 1987.
it's got 4 defects. they give you those numbers on the label because you have to manually enter them when you low-level format it!
I'm not sure it's working because the drive's logic board isn't screwed down. and it's missing the insulating spacer so it can just short out against the metal case 😐

on the bench of destr--err--healing today: this crappy 486 motherboard which needs an upgrade for its 14.318MHz oscillator. Image
some backstory: this motherboard claims to handle 3.3V processors (like the DX4-100) but it has no 3.3V regulator!
here is the PLL chip. there is a nearby crystal (14.318MHz) which it uses to generate all the clock frequencies used by the board. Image

i'm going to try something really crazy that probably won't work. this is the CPU board from my PS/2 model 95, and it doesn't work. 🧵
that's THIS machine, the IBM PS/2 model 95. i tried fixing it before to no avail.
no matter what i tried, it always got stuck with this error message when i tried to boot off a floppy disk (the reference disk, in this case)
