Ahead of this morning's Security Council session on Gaza, two diplomats involved tell @TimesofIsrael there is not an expectation that the parties will try a 3rd time to pass a joint statement, partially because this session is open to the public.
All parties at the session are expected to call for an immediate ceasefire, though the US will likely take a more moderate approach and be less critical of Israeli operations in Gaza, one diplomat tells @TimesofIsrael
We're live!
"The fighting must stop. The fighting must stop immediately," says @antonioguterres as he opens today's session on the escalation in Israel and Gaza.
He laments casualties to both sides and condemns Hamas rocket fire in addition to Israeli counterstrikes.
Guterres says he is "appalled" by the Israeli strike on a Gaza refugee camp yesterday that left a family of 10 dead and "greatly concerned" by the IDF strike on a tower in the enclave that housed media organizations. Israel says it also housed Hamas operatives.
The secretary general condemns the crackdown by Israeli security forces on Palestinian protesters in the West Bank and East Jerusalem where Palestinian families are facing looming eviction in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
.@antonioguterres also asserts that the violence in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza threatens to spill over into the broader region

Breaking: In a partial return to a pre-Trump era norm, the US State Department's annual report on human rights violations around the world published on Tuesday referred to the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights as territories "occupied" by Israel.
However, the Biden administration did not go as far as to title the specific chapter in the 2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, "Israel and the Occupied Territories" as had been the custom for decades until the Trump administration...
...Led by former US ambassador to Israel David Friedman pushed to have it altered to say "Israel" followed by a list of the disputed territories. In the 2017 report, the chapter was titled "Israel, Golan Heights, the West Bank and Gaza.
