Thread on Delhi govt's "freebie politics". So often we hear this lament/ propaganda that @AamAadmiParty wins due to giving freebies. Let's examine this.
Q: What do govt's largely run on?
A: Public money paid via taxes (income, GST, VAT, duties etc). 1/n
Freebies for people vs politicians? I'll take certain freebies for the people (aam janta) versus freebies (private jets, govt bungalow renovations, foreign trips etc) for politicians any day.
What would the average Indian unable to eat 3 square meals a day prefer? 2/n
Instead of spending money on fancy jets for CM, renovations of govt bungalows, fancy PR agencies, Delhi Govt gives people free water, free electricity, free bus travel fr women of all strata, world class govt schools & hospitals. 3/n
By curbing corruption in PWD & other depts, Delhi govt saved 100s of crores, increasing the State budget when other States are doubling & tripling their debt.
Delhi is the only state with revenue surplus for the past 6 years now as reported by CAG. 4/n
NITI aayog had lauded Delhi govt on Delhi's high income levels & 'landmark transformation' in govt schools, awarding it top NAS score 2020. It tracks quality of education & level of human capital development, via indicators as pupil-teacher ratio etc. 5/n
AAP firmly believes in citizens' fundamental rights such as right to life and right to live with dignity, so they don't believe in charging citizens money for a basic need like minimal water. AAP's citizen-friendly spending policies should be welcome. 6/n
Critics of Delhi govt's freebie politics may be used to being treated as 3rd class citizens in their own country. When we vote fr most legacy parties, once elected they become rulers/ royalty & we lowly subjects. But @AamAadmiParty treats the aam aadmi as a 1st class citizen. 7/n
INC, BJP etc can only hope to copy parts of #DelhiModel by offering 200 units free electricity in Assam/WB elections, when they don't have the integrity to do so in as a policy in ALL States they govern & we know they would do so by raising some other taxes to balance it out. 8/n
What @AamAadmiParty is doing with ~25% budget on public education & ~15% on public healthcare is reversing decades of 1-2% spending on these crucial aspects of Human Capital Development. With India's population govts must do so & not decide fates of children on "Cash System". 9/n
When the cradle-to-grave welfare model of @AamAadmiParty is looked into in depth this way, I don't see how anyone can have a problem with spending Public money on the Public and better Public services. Isn't that actually the right thing to do? More power to the people. ❤️ 10/n
An INC Karnataka leader spoke passionately on Delhi's Education Revolution in the State Assembly recently. He stated how politicians' 'vested interests' in Private education and healthcare have lead to dividing children on the basis of "cash system". 11/n
Interestingly another INC Karnataka leader also recently spoke in their State Assembly on how #DelhiModel is developing the human capital of the underprivileged.
What better testament can there be when your rivals applaud your work? 12/n
