Attention, deprescribers 💊

What are 10 critical #deprescribing articles you should probably know about?

@wadddee and I have asked that very question and compiled a list of our top 10 #deprescribing articles essential for all deprescribers! 👇
2/n

We chose 10 articles (out of many candidates!) that, in our opinion, together provide an overview of the field of #deprescribing. This covers the mindset and complexity of deprescribing, the development and testing of new interventions, and perspectives on future research.

We described the selections in more detail in a blog post at the @Deprescribing Blog 👉 deprescribing.org/news/10-import…

Here we will BRIEFLY highlight each of the articles!

Okay, here we go! 👇
4/n

#1: In our first selection, @DrHollyHolmes et al. introduces the very core concepts integral to #deprescribing: life expectancy vs time to benefit, goals of care, and treatment targets.

Simply a must read for all deprescribers!

#2: How is it that people end up on so many medications? 💊

This is nicely demonstrated by @DanielOkeowo2 et al. in this paper applying treatment guidelines to a hypothetical older patient with multimorbidity and life-limiting illness!

#3: #Deprescribing may not be as easy to implement in clinical practice as we would hope. Why is that?

With the deprescribing rainbow, @adamtodd138 et al. highlights the myriad considerations that go into deprescribing at the patient level 🌈

#6: What about all of the #deprescribing tools out there? 🛠️

Here, @MikeSteinman and Fick nicely frames the pros/cons of using explicit tools such as the Beers or STOPP criteria, which continue to be highly used despite important limitations.

#7: How to get updated on what existing #deprescribing interventions have achieved (or been trying to achieve)?

Isenor et al. takes a closer look at this in this review and highlights important gaps in these interventions!

11/n

#8: Various patient education materials for #deprescribing have been developed. However, we have room for improvement in this area, as there are important limitations to many of these tools, as nicely demonstrated in this review by Fajardo et al.

bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
12/n

#9: In our next selection, @KatharinaJungo et al. goes beyond the traditional barriers/facilitators research to look at what actually influences physician #deprescribing decisions in clinical practice.

#10: Our final selection is a call to action for all of us!

Patient-centered and clinically important outcomes are important to capture in #deprescribing research, and we have a long way to go as demonstrated by Aubert et al.
