So critical that the UN High Commissioner for @Refugees has publicly called on the US to restore asylum in line with international legal and human rights obligations, and end use of Title 42 to block asylum.
"Guaranteed access to safe territory and the prohibition of pushbacks of asylum seekers are core precepts of the 1951 Refugee Convention and refugee law, which governments are required to uphold to protect the rights and lives of refugees."
Rare for the UN High Commissioner to issue a request like this to the US publicly, but the Biden admin has continued to use Trump policy to violate the Refugee Convention as the world prepares to mark its 70th anniversary. And attacks on impacted asylum seekers are mounting.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is publicly calling for an end to use of Title 42 to block asylum.
Long past time to rescind the flawed @CDCorder pushed by the Trump White House.
For those who missed it 🧵
Just yesterday UNHCR Asst High Commissioner for Protection issued a statement:
"It is ironic that, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Refugee Convention, attempts are being made to weaken its principles and spirit." unhcr.org/news/press/202…
Instead, the Asst HC said, "the priority must be to find more effective ways to guarantee the universal right to seek asylum and other rights provided by international refugee law.”
Plus,
Earlier this week UNHCR responded to the killing of a Cuban asylum seeker who had been turned away to Mexico by the US under MPP + UNHCR Deputy Commissioner visited asylum seekers expelled by the US under Title 42.
Does this mean the Biden admin has adopted the Trump admin's discredited, illegal, misuse of public health authority to expel & block people seeking asylum at the border?
The Trump-Miller Title 42 misuse is illegal, specious from a public health perspective + endangers lives.🧵
