Rare for the UN High Commissioner to issue a request like this to the US publicly, but the Biden admin has continued to use Trump policy to violate the Refugee Convention as the world prepares to mark its 70th anniversary. And attacks on impacted asylum seekers are mounting.

Just yesterday UNHCR Asst High Commissioner for Protection issued a statement:

"It is ironic that, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Refugee Convention, attempts are being made to weaken its principles and spirit."

Instead, the Asst HC said, "the priority must be to find more effective ways to guarantee the universal right to seek asylum and other rights provided by international refugee law.”
