NEW: Republican Rep. Anthony Gonzalez had some strong words about the future of the GOP today during a forum with @TheCityClub of Cleveland. nbcnews.com/politics/donal…
"I think continuing to perpetuate falsehoods, especially ones that are dangerous that led to the violence on Jan. 6, is a recipe for disaster for the party, but it’s also horribly irresponsible," Rep. Anthony Gonzalez said. nbcnews.com/politics/donal…
More from Gonzalez, who was censured by the Ohio GOP on state of the Republicans: "Sometimes when I hear us talk about the state of our party, we talk as if we somehow won an election. Right now, my concern is we’re trying to excommunicate our own voters." nbcnews.com/politics/donal…
Here's the full video of Gonzalez's forum. Lots more there besides the Trump/GOP stuff, including some interesting policy discussions that he and his team hope end up framing the #OH16 race. cityclub.org/forums/2021/05…
The Canton Repository, a key newspaper in Gonzalez’s district, has more on the City Club forum, which also showcased the congressman’s cerebral, policymaking and pragmatic sides. cantonrep.com/story/news/202…

Hello from the Ohio Political Summit in Strongsville, where Matt Gaetz will speak this afternoon to a room of suburban Republicans. A bunch of Senate and gov candidates have backed out of the event. Right now attendees are watching a video of Trump’s 2020 campaign kickoff.
A scene from the parking lot.
Just spoke with Dave Desser, a gentleman from Toledo who is leading a "No More DeWine" effort. He tells me he'd rather vote for a Democrat than someone he considers a "RINO."
"I'd vote for Nan Whaley before I vote for Mike DeWine."
Who’s going to run for Rob Portman’s seat? I’ve got a bunch of names — and several responses — from potential candidates on both sides here. buzzfeednews.com/article/henryg…
Other Democrats being mentioned include Nan Whaley, David Pepper, Danny O’Connor, and AMY ACTON, DeWine’s former health director. Whaley keeping options open, a Dem close to her says. O’Connor still processing the Portman news. buzzfeednews.com/article/henryg…
There will be a lot of high-profile Ohio Republicans who take a long look at the Portman seat. Names already being mentioned: Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, AG Dave Yost, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, former state treasurer Josh Mandel, and yes, Jim Jordan.
"Well, this will be a total shit show," one Ohio Republican strategist just texted me.
On the Democratic side, you're going to hear a lot about Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley and Rep. Tim Ryan.
NEW: It’s not just Iowa and Ohio. Trump also has scaled back TV ads significantly in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota — signaling a retreat from the Midwest. buzzfeednews.com/article/henryg…
Besides being dark in IA and OH, Trump campaign has canceled $2 million in ad reservations in both MI and WI since early September. And in MN, Trump has chopped about $5 million from the TV budget. buzzfeednews.com/article/henryg…
All of this shows the cash crunch Trump is in. Meanwhile, Biden is making his most aggressive play in Ohio yet. buzzfeednews.com/article/henryg…
Biden campaign manager @jomalleydillon is doing a live interview with Politico right now. Asked about suggestions that Biden organizers should be knocking doors in spite of the pandemic, she says door-knocking "doesn't really matter."
More from @jomalleydillon: "We spend so much time talking about tactics. But fundamentally, knocking on a door and not reaching anyone doesn't get you much except leaving a piece of left behind — you might as well send a piece of mail."
"We have over 2,500 staff across all of our battleground states directly engaging with voters, they're doing it over the phone, they're doing it via text, they're doing it online, they're meeting people where they are" and "not putting people in harm's way," @jomalleydillon adds.
Ex-Rhode Island Rep. Claudine Schneider and other former congressional Republicans have launched Republicans for Integrity, an "ad hoc" group that will target Republican incumbents this fall. republicansforintegrity.org
Other founding members of Republicans for Integrity: ex-Rep. Kolbe (AZ), ex-Sen. Durenberger (MN), ex-Rep. Clinger (PA), and ex-Rep. McCloskey (CA). All were anti-Trump in 2016. Schneider and Durenberger openly supported Clinton.
Schneider tells me the group will not accept donations or form as a super PAC or 501c3/4. Efforts will include op-ed writing and earned media. So, not a massive media campaign. But ...
