"They send 'black' vaccines for us while people in the cities are being given 'white' vaccines!"
"The vaccines are to kill us as we are poor!"
These statements certainly have much deeper connotations attached to them than just 'safety concerns'.

#VaccineHesitancy among the rural and the tribal communities is a complex phenomenon and is driven by more than mere lack of health awareness or misinformation. It's also not something which has emerged abruptly overnight.
+
The origins of their apprehensions are rooted in the historic backdrop of perpetual discrimination, exploitation and alienation faced over the ages at the hands of those in power.
+
It's a manifestation of deeply embedded fear and a despairing feeling of 'we are not needed' which has emerged as a result of being structurally pushed into leading a life of grave marginalisation and deprivation.
+
Their existence has often been detested and devalued by the better offs and those in power and now they can't believe that the same people r concerned about saving their lives.
It's definitely going to take us a lot to bring them out of this state of almost indelible mistrust.
+
Just awareness drives won't help. We will have to engage intensively with the local communities, identify populations where the hesitancy is acute n rampant, take help of community leaders whose voices matter, engage them in planning n execution of vaccination sessions.
