Thinking about how in the last two years or so #StarWars has set up so many pieces for an overarching cloning plot line throughout the whole timeline that are just a few unconnected dots away from being a timeline unifying story (SUPER LONG THREAD)
It all starts with AOTC and TCW but mostly just in how cloning works on Kamino. The clones, while developing unique personalities, are still genetically the same as the donor: Jango Fett. Boba is a clone altered to age normally, showing us changes can be made to the process
Then we enter the modern clone storytelling with #Mandalorian season 1. Kuiil mentions that Grogu is not a “strandcast,” a word we had never heard before this mention. We learn that Kuiil worked in “gene farms” for the Empire and that Grogu looked “too evolved” to be a strandcast
Then there’s #TheRiseofSkywalker showing us the “dark science” going on Exegol. Palpatine’s soul has inhabited a clone body but it’s deteriorating due to the dark side. We also learn that Palpatine/Exegol’s clone engineers were a part of creating Supreme Leader Snoke
Later media like the novelization and visual dictionary elaborated on Exegol’s experiments, establishing that Snoke and Rey’s Father were “strandcasts”: bioengineered beings that are not exact clones of the original donor. Snoke developed force sensitivity but came out deformed
Palpatine had hoped he would be able to inhabit the body of his strandcast “son,” thinking it would be more stable than his own. It did come out stable, but without force sensitivity, making it useless to palpatine.
Mando Season 2 shows us a cloning experiment on Nevarro happening under Gideon’s imperial remnant. It is implied that Gideon wants to “study” grogu’s blood in order to use the midichlorians (abbreviated “M-count”) in order to use as part of this experiment.
While S2 does not state this explicitly, it’s likely that Gideon is trying to imbue force sensitivity into one of these beings. Dr Pershing, Gideon’s scientist, has ties to Kamino, evidenced by a uniform patch (1st image from StarWars.com’s episode guide for “The Sin”)
Some have pointed out that the music in this scene is very similar to Snoke’s theme in the Sequel Trilogy as well. Here are the names of the tracks to compare: “The Experiment” from Mando S2, “Snoke” from The Force Awakens and “Revisiting Snoke” from The Last Jedi.
(A recent Vader comic implies that Palpatine has been using Luke’s severed hand (presumably) shortly before ROTJ as part of a force sensitivity experiment. We do not know this whole story yet, but the hand has been theorized to be used as a midichlorian donor like Grogu)
Then we return to the PT era with #TheBadBatch, where we have already learned more about cloning. The Bad Batch and Omega are different from other Jango clones in different ways, showing that it is possible for clones to be altered from the original donor in stable ways
Near the end of episode 3 “Replacements,” Lama Su and Nala Se discuss how they need at least one of the escaped clones (presumably Omega) to produce a “superior clone” to prove to the empire that Kamino is valuable.
Many have theorized that Omega is force sensitive, but I’m not sure. Every force sensitivity experiment we’ve seen so far has failed (Mando), not produced results (Rey’s father), or causes severe degradation (Snoke/Palpy). She could be the exception, but I personally doubt it
This whole meta-narrative has largely been constructed in the last two years and spans eras (PT with #BadBatch, OT with #Mando, and ST with #TROS). While the three stories are not explicitly connected yet (besides the patch on Pershing’s uniform), I think in time they may be.
We’ve seen cloning begin on Kamino where it slowly produced defective, but useful clones in the #BadBatch, references to “gene farms” that Kuiil worked on with the Empire, experiments on Nevarro led by a human wearing a kaminoan patch in The Mandalorian...
...the creation of a unique, yet deformed force-sensitive being in Snoke as well as a stable, yet “disappointingly ordinary” strandcast in Rey’s Father. These experiments seem isolated, but are part of an ongoing story about force sensitivity, cloning, and unique stradcasts
There are just a few dots that need to be connected for it all to fit together. Many, including me, have theorized that there will be an uprising on Kamino at the end of #TheBadBatch. I think it’s likely this is suppressed by the empire and human cloners take over there
The empire eventually sets up gene farms that we know Kuiil worked at. They must have been relatively common knowledge if Din “Does this look Jedi to you” Djarin knows what strandcasts are. Maybe a gene farm will appear in an upcoming imperial era story, but I doubt it
Wild theory time: I think Gideon’s operation is connected to the Exegol experiments in some way, though I don’t think Gideon is aware that the emperor is rotting away on exegol. However, I think it’s possible that his Remnant produces the being that becomes Snoke in the future
With Gideon and Pershing in captivity, the Mando connected shows will need a new threat. Most, including me, assume this will be Thrawn, but I could see Snoke acting as a “wild card” figure and a threat beyond the military capabilities of Thrawn and/or Gideon
I hope we get a story someday that fleshes out the Rey’s Father (give him a name) and Exegol stuff more but we’re probably awhile out from that.
I do think future stories will continue to flesh out this cloning/strandcast/force sensitivity meta-narrative, but I’m sure most of my specific theories will be wrong. I’m sure whatever the storytellers come up with will be shocking emotionally resonant and interesting
