Unbelievably brazen move by Belarusian dictator Lukashenko to fake a bomb threat, scramble a jet, & force a @Ryanair flight to land in Minsk to arrest @nexta_tv founder @pr0tez, who helped organized last years protests against Lukashenko. Protasevich could face the death penalty.
Reaction from the Belarusian opposition leader in exile who’d have likely won last year’s presidential election if it hadn’t been rigged. She’s asking for an international response, including further sanctions against Lukasheno’s regime.
Here’s the president of Lithuania reacting to today’s absolutely mad events. The Ryan Air fight was headed to his capital of Vilnius. The Irish airline had flown through EU airspace before crossing into Belarusian airspace.
Here’s the end of the Ryan Air plane’s route, showing how close it was to its destination, Vilnius, when it was intercepted by a Belarusian MiG and diverted to Minsk. via @nexta_tv
The Belarusian MOD has confirmed the events in a statement (posted below), although it doesn’t mention @nexta_tv’s Protasevich was the real reason for the operation and says it “provided assistance” to the plane after the totally bogus bomb threat.
As @christogrozev points out, Lukashenko seems to have taken a page from the playbook of Ukraine’s notoriously tricky security services. That alleged, failed op was apparently to divert a plane carrying Russian Wagner mercs from Minsk to Kyiv & arrest them for fighting in Donbas.
Photos from the Minsk airport after the flight was forced to land there show Belarusian authorities going through the motions, checking passengers and baggage for a “bomb” it claimed was on board.
A reminder of the the significance of @nexta_tv: the activism-focused media channel played a major role in exposing the brutality of Lukashenko’s police forces, notorious for beating and torturing activists, journalists, and protesters.

Background: buzzfeednews.com/article/christ…
Ryan Air has released a statement saying Belarusian air traffic control notified the flight of a “potential security threat on board” and instructed the plane to “divert to the nearest airport, Minsk.” But flight tracking data ~clearly~ shows that Vilnius airport was closer.
At Vilnius airport, where Ryan Air flight was supposed to land, a small group of protesters have reportedly gathered, holding signs that read “I/ We are Roman Protasevich,” the Belarusian opposition activist who was pulled off the flight & arrested by Lukashenko’s regime today.
Strong condemnation of Lukashenko’s actions from the UK.
.@AdinaValean, Euro commissioner for @Transport_EU, says this is good for “everyone.” But it’s not. A Belarusian citizen, activist, & journalist was taken from the plane and arrested on bogus “terrorism” charges that could mean 15 yrs imprisonment, possibly capital punishment.
Screenshot for posterity.
Seems she realized that that statement didn’t quite convey things completely and accurately.
Germany says the EU must ensure there are “clear consequences” for Belarus after today’s events.
Not a single mention in @RyanairPress’ statement that Belarusian authorities pulled a passenger off its plane, essentially kidnapping him. Instead, the airline continues to say the plane was diverted to the closest airport, which it wasn’t. The plane was closer to Vilnius.
Response from the US ambassador to Belarus, who is based in Vilnius:
Good point raised by top Russian investigative journalist: Besides Protasevich and his girlfriend, who were pulled off the plane, four Russian citizens did not re-board and fly to Vilnius. That raises the question, were they security service agents involved in this air piracy?
EU meeting tomorrow to discuss response to today’s air piracy on the part of Belarusian dictator Lukashenko. Here’s what could be on the table:
NEW: @SecBlinken responds, says US citizens were on board the RyanAir flight: US “strongly condemns the forced diversion of a flight between two EU member states and the subsequent removal and arrest of journalist Raman Pratasevich in Minsk. We demand his immediate release.”
More US reaction. Here’s this from @ChrisMurphyCT on dictator Lukashenko’s extraordinary actions and @RyanairPress statement that left out the kidnapping of two of its passengers and forced diversion of its plane with an armed MiG.
Updated statement from @RyanairPress calling yesterday’s incident in Belarus “an act of aviation piracy.”
RyanAir CEO: “It appears the intent of the authorities was to remove a journalist and his travelling companion… we believe there were some KGB agents offloaded at the airport as well.” newstalk.com/news/oleary-fo…
Belarusian journalist and activist Roman Protasevich appears in chilling video circulated by pro-Lukashenko media. Very likely under duress, says he’s being treated “correctly” and “lawfully” though he shows possible signs of physical abuse, is held in Minsk Detention Center no.1

Erik Prince’s guy Tom Williams keeps popping up in pro-Trump smear and spying campaigns. Pet NYT, Williams replaced ex-spy Richard Seddon as a Project Veritas trainer.

I reported for @BuzzFeedNews that Prince provided Williams to Rudy Giuliani as a bodyguard on his Ukraine trip.
Here’s the NYT story by @MarkMazzettiNYT and @adamgoldmanNYT that mentions Williams’ role in Project Veritas: nytimes.com/2021/05/13/us/…

And my story from last week about Williams working at Giuliani’s bodyguard in Kyiv in the attached tweet.
Tom “Doc” Williams blocked me on Twitter after I reached out to him for comment. Then he locked down his account. But of course I took screenshots of everything before he did both. His tweets were filled with pro-Trump and pro-Erik Prince and Blackwater content.

Wow, big move in Ukraine. The country's security service is searching the Kyiv-area home of Viktor Medvedchuk, MP and leader of the country's pro-Russia party and close friend of Putin's, who is godfather of Medvedchuk's daughter. nv.ua/ukraine/politi…
Reporter for @tweetsNV now says Ukraine's prosecutor general signed a suspicion of treason against Viktor Medvedchuk and his closest associate and business partner, Taras Kozak.
Ukraine sanctioned Medvedchuk and his wife, Oksana Marchenko, in February. It also sanctioned Taras Kozak and banned three pro-Russian TV channels that he owns and which Medvedchuk is believed to control. meduza.io/en/news/2021/0…

NEW: Details Of A Fateful Call Between Rudy Giuliani And The Ukrainians Have Been Secret For Years. @BuzzFeedNews Has The Full Transcript.

Giuliani, in his own words, pressuring Ukrainian President Zelensky's chief of staff Andriy Yermak on July 22, 2019:
buzzfeednews.com/article/christ…
A select few quotes from the call, which led to the infamous Trump-Zelensky call 3 days later, have been published before. But in full, you can really see how Giuliani pushed Ukraine to open investigations that would favor Trump.
“I have no interest in anybody not telling the truth or exaggerating,” Giuliani says in part of the call. “All we need from the president is to say: ‘I’m gonna put an honest prosecutor in charge, he’s gonna investigate and dig up the evidence that presently exists..."

In a rare move, Ukrainian President Zelensky condemns a march in Kyiv that lauded the Waffen-SS and calls on the National Police to hold those responsible accountable for violating a relatively new law against glorifying totalitarian regimes. president.gov.ua/ru/news/shodo-…
The march was relatively small, with just ~200 ppl. It doesn't mean Kyiv is overrun with Nazis, as the Kremlin might light you to think. But these marches have been allowed for years, & participants include military vets & members of groups who claim to not be Nazi sympathizers.
Here's a good @zaborona_media article about the march, which took place on Wednesday. You can see flags of several Ukrainian far-right paramilitary units. Also leading the group was Yevhen Karas of the neo-Nazi (although he denies it is) group C14. zaborona.com/ru/poteryannye…

Meanwhile, intelligence agency leaders are testifying in a House Intel Committee hearing on global threats.
c-span.org/video/?510634-…

FBI Director Wray discussed domestic extremism and the "salad bar" ideology, or ideology hopping, of extremists.
Wray, on anarchist violent extremists/antifa (Republicans brought it up), says when it comes to them sometimes there's tendency to view how structured & organized something is as a proxy for how seriously threatening something is. "Those two things don't necessarily conflate."
Wray did say, however, that anarchist violent extremism is a threat, and he's not minimizing the threat they pose. He added that the number of investigations in the area has "dramatically increased" on his watch.
