It’s pretty obvious that as a U.S. politician, you probably shouldn’t insult the military. Military policy, maybe, but not the people who actually defend this country. It’s such an easy landmine to avoid. #velshi

Senator Ted Cruz recently retweeted a video which started out featuring a buff, bald Russian soldier with brute masculinity dripping off him like sweat. #velshi
3/11
The video is spliced with this bright animated ad that tells the story of why a female American soldier, raised by two mothers, chose to join the U.S. Army. #velshi
4/11
Cruz compared the Russian army’s recruitment ad to America’s ad saying, “Holy crap. Perhaps a woke, emasculated military is not the best idea.” #velshi
5/11
Cruz, an army of one, in some ways, doubled-down by saying, “We have the greatest military on earth, but Dem politicians & woke media are trying to turn them into pansies.” #velshi
6/11
I don't know why Ted Cruz promoted a Russian military recruitment video while using an anti-gay slur to disrespect the greatest military on the planet. But perhaps he needs some reminders: America’s military is voluntary. #velshi
7/11
These “woke” and “emasculated” service members swear an oath to the constitution to defend our country, without us even having to ask. Ted Cruz, to my knowledge, has never volunteered to put his life on the line for this nation. #velshi
8/11
More importantly, Ted Cruz seems to have a hard time understanding or appreciating the idea that the U.S. military KNOWS that recruiting people from all walks of life is its greatest strength, not a weakness. #velshi
9/11
Our military is made up of every gender, sexual orientation, race, background, height, hair color, and faith. They are the bravest people in the world. And they are a snapshot of our whole, great country. #velshi
10/11
Maybe if Ted Cruz and the Republican party could actually get behind diversity, inclusiveness and big-tent thinking, maybe they wouldn’t have to gerrymander districts, push the Big Lie and change voting laws to win elections. #velshi
11/11
America’s diversity is its biggest strength. Our weakness, on the other hand, is politicians who tear others down, insult the men & women who serve us & leave their constituents to freeze to death in a winter storm while they hop on a flight to sunny Cancun. #velshi

Democracy relies expressly on the ability to form an opinion and express it. Which is why what happened this week to the journalist @nhannahjones is so troubling. #velshi
@nhannahjones 2/13
Ms. Hannah-Jones is a friend of VELSHI, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, a Peabody award winner and a genius in the literal sense; she was awarded the MacArthur Genius grant in 2017. #velshi
@nhannahjones 3/13
She was recently appointed to a prestigious role at the University of North Carolina’s respected journalism school. A role that’s been historically followed by the recipient being granted tenure at the University. #velshi
1/7 The first known group of Asian American and Pacific Islanders, the Filipinos, are known to have settled in Louisiana in 1763. That’s not a fact a lot of Americans know. Nor do a lot of non-Asian Americans know about Vincent Chin. #velshi
2/7 Vincent Chin was a 27-year-old Chinese American living in Detroit in the 80’s. Those of us who were around back then will remember the world dealing with the aftermath of a global oil crisis that drove gas prices up and made big American cars passe. #velshi
3/7 Ford, GM and Chrysler collapsed as Americans embraced smaller, more fuel-efficient Japanese cars like Nissans, Hondas and Toyotas. Tens of thousands of jobs were lost and some Americans blamed Japan. #velshi

Israel has a right to exist and to defend itself. That’s an indisputable fact. But so do Palestinians. And that's a fact that is often ignored. Palestinians are, at best, third class citizens in the nation of their birth. #velshi
2/16
The idea that it’s even remotely controversial to call what Israel has imposed on Palestinians a form of Apartheid is laughable. One look at a current map of Israel, Gaza and the Occupied Territories conjures up only one other example: Apartheid Era in South Africa. #velshi
3/16
The Israeli government, on an ongoing basis, declares parcels of land on which Palestinians live to be either of military or archeological importance, causing residents to be evicted. Sometimes there’s a court case, and almost always, the Palestinians lose. #velshi

“If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?” is a famous line from Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit, “Hamilton” though Alexander Hamilton may not have said it that way, exactly, in real life. #velshi

It is the sentiment that without knowing who you are and what you believe in, you are doomed to be manipulated. And that is the situation in which today’s Republican Party finds itself. #velshi
3/10
Remember when the GOP was the Party of Lincoln? A party whose very existence owed itself to the opposition to slavery. Republicans have been partisans of themes like law and order, rugged individualism, entrepreneurship, free trade, small government, and low taxes. #velshi

Mitch McConnell: "100% of our focus is on stopping this new admin. // We're confronted w/ severe challenges with a new administration & a narrow majority of Dems in the house & a 50/50 senate, to turn America into a socialist country. And this is 100% of my focus" #velshi
2/12
Well, that’s 100% a lie. In fairness, McConnell has since softened his view about obstruction being 100% of his focus. But he still let the cat out of the bag: the G-O-P is a party with no actual agenda other than to sabotage the current administration. #velshi

As an econ guy, I’m troubled by the continued false narrative about socialism. Socialism is a system in which the gov't owns the means of production. Meaning actual ownership of factories, hospitals, even machinery used to produce goods & services that ppl consume. #velshi

We’ve been officially voting in elections in America since 1789 and, while it hasn’t always been perfect we’ve gotten pretty good at it. But it's changed a lot since the beginning granting the right to vote to all people regardless of gender, race or color. #velshi
2/12
Outlawing poll taxes and even making your vote private starting in 1890 when many states began to use secret ballots to prevent voters from being bullied into voting for candidates they didn’t support. #velshi
3/12
A lot has changed since we started voting but one thing hasn't, and probably shouldn't. Voting in America has always been the responsibility of the government. State, Local AND federal. #velshi
