Within the VCP (vision, capital, people) framework, a huge part of the people component is org structure. Getting the structure right is really, really important and tends to be under-appreciated.
Things to consider when forming an org...
There are traditional org structures that many default to, but every company has certain roles that are more critical than others. Figure out what those roles are and make sure they report directly to the CEO, even if it’s not the traditional way.
For example, a head of product might report into a chief customer officer or a chief technology officer — if product is really important to the success of the company, that leader should be a direct report to the CEO.
Having important roles report to the CEO allows you to hire more senior, better leaders and ensures the organization is as flat as possible — the less overlap, the better.
And, when leveling an org, leave some space....
If you have chiefs / EVP-level reporting to a CEO — think through the leveling of the next level down. Instead of the chiefs hiring all SVPs, have them hire VPs / Sr Dirs to leave room for promos. As the company grows, you want leaders to grow and have room for new talent.
