"Australia's federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has rejected any suggestion that he & his medical college advisers have endorsed the 'affirmative' treatment model of children’s hospital gender clinics." 1/ theaustralian.com.au/nation/politic…
"He was responding to Monday’s @AustralianStory program, in which the general medicine director of Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Sarah McNab, claimed a 2020 medical college report to Mr Hunt was 'incredibly validating' for the hospital’s influential gender clinic."
"Victoria’s Health Minister Martin Foley was quoted (by @ABCaustralia as saying) he had to 'give Greg Hunt and the federal government kudos' for letting the medical college @TheRACP 'determine the outcome'."
"But Mr Hunt told @australian he had 'not endorsed any particular model or approach to the treatment of children and adolescents with gender dysphoria'." There is rising international concern about the puberty blockers & cross-sex hormone drugs given to minors at gender clinics.
The ABC made no mention of Mr Hunt's 2020 request for the states to "develop an evidence-based national approach" to under-18 gender care, & the program gives viewers the impression Mr Hunt & the RACP have settled the gender clinic debate. No sign yet of new national approach.
The ABC denies it has misrepresented the minister, saying: "At no point did Australian Story suggest the federal minister for health had endorsed anything other than the need not to have a national inquiry into the treatment of gender dysphoria in children and young people".
A news.com.au write-up of the ABC program states: "A review of the (@RCHMelbourne affirmative gender clinic) by the RACP has since recommended that similar services be established around Australia". False, but not surprising the reporter was misled.
"The hormonal drug treatments of the gender clinics rest on a weak evidence base according to multiple systematic reviews, including a world-first review involving Dr Ken Pang, who is head of research at Dr Telfer's gender clinic." abc.net.au/austory/statem…

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Melbourne has so far remained silent on whether or not it has a policy to refer teenage female patients to private surgeons for double mastectomies, which are promoted internationally with poorly evidenced claims of mental health benefits.
But RCH, or at least the gender clinic, clearly contemplated some time ago that its own surgeons could soon provide trans mastectomies for patients--or at least refer them to private surgeons. You have to cast your mind back some years to the period when the gender clinic was promoted uncritically by The Lancet, our Family Court and most mainstream media--but especially the ABC & The Age newspaper.
In 2018, RCH issued its treatment guidelines, a document endorsed (in draft) by the Family Court when it accepted the hospital's dubious claim that gender medicine had made such advances that the judges could safely wind back their supervision of under-18 treatment decisions.
Prof @ian_hickie mocked @7NewsSpotlight by suggesting they could come up with just "one doctor" troubled about medicalised gender change for minors. The way Hickie told it, gender clinics reduce suicidality & save lives. #AusPol 1/
One doctor? Dr Jillian Spencer, who appeared on the program, has so far found 155 doctors willing to sign her petition for an inquiry into our children's hospital gender clinics. Willing despite the inevitable activist attempts to smear their reputations & cost them their jobs.
In 2019, an online petition for a parliamentary inquiry attracted 260 doctors' names in three days, before an activist spam attack forced its closure. This included included 20 professors or associate professors, 14 paediatricians & 20 psychiatrists. genderclinicnews.com/p/shine-a-ligh…
"The mother of a 13-year-old with gender dysphoria has abruptly withdrawn an application seeking a Family Court order to allow the child to take puberty blockers, after trying to have the independent children’s lawyer thrown off the case." 1/ theaustralian.com.au/nation/mother-…
This case is another sign of a better informed & potentially more cautious approach to medicalised gender change within Australia's family law system, which has to approve treatment for minors if parents disagree.

Commenting on the case of the 13yo, where the independent children's lawyer warned of treatment risks, emeritus prof of law Patrick Parkinson said the decision to prescribe puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones was "extraordinarily serious."
"Regret after surgery: hard to describe the pain"--frontpage story online today from Norway's mass circulation newspaper VG.
"The last thing Aleksander thinks before the anaesthetic makes him pass out is: 'Help me, I don't want to do this'." #Detransition#GenderClinics
Shortly before his interview with VG, Aleksander had uploaded to YouTube his story explaining how "bullying and exclusion made him start taking medication to become a woman." vg.no/nyheter/innenr…
" 'I'm the elephant in the room,' he says, smiling gently from the sofa. 'I am the uncomfortable truth about how bad things can go'. 'Focusing on gender and identity has become a pandemic in our society'."
Paediatrician Dylan Wilson: “I have direct evidence of children treated at [Queensland's gender clinic] who have reported that they genuinely believed they would become the opposite sex. The lack of genuine consent for this is likely to form the basis of future legal action." /1
On Monday, The Australian reported Dr Wilson's call for an immediate halt to any new treatment with puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones at the Brisbane-based clinic. The hospital defends its "evidence-based care" by citing low-quality WPATH & RCH treatment guidelines. #AusPol
Gender clinics in Australia face mounting pressure. England has decided to confine puberty blockers to a formal research setting. Sweden & Finland have also restricted routine use of medicalised gender change. The evidence base is very weak & uncertain. open.substack.com/pub/genderclin…
