All you need to know about conservatives when it comes to debates about racism in America is this: these people believe the Civil Rights Act was wrong to prohibit racial discrimination in the private sector bc they think property owners' rights outweigh all else (thread)...
They admit this if you push them. Sometimes you don't even have to. Ben Shapiro says it openly, for instance. Which means the "progress" they brag about in "prohibiting discrimination" and systemic racism is progress they don't even support having happened (2)...
Had it been up to them, for instance, lunch counter operators could have continued to prohibit Blacks from dining at their establishments. Oh sure, they'll say they personally find those businesses' racism awful and would personally have not shopped/eaten there...(3)
But they think the sit-ins, for instance, which targeted those businesses for financial ruin unless the law changed, were wrongheaded (early cancel culture!). And when cops dragged John Lewis and others away from those businesses, conservatives think that was proper (4)...
After all, sit-in protesters were 'trespassing' on private property. When the right looks at those brave warriors for justice, on the one hand, and those bigoted cops & white goons yelling, assaulting, or arresting them, on the other, they philosophically side w/the latter (5)...
That is all you need to know about them. Even as they brag that Northern Republicans were key to passing the CRA, they think the CRA went too far. They are more in line w/segregationist southern Dems and right wing Western Republicans of that era than the Northern ones (6)...
...who teamed up with non-Southern Dems and passed civil rights laws. The fact that they can look at cops dragging protesters off stools and think the cops are in the right and protesters are in the wrong makes them vile and unworthy of being listened to about this or any subject
