Sask Vaccination Update

Milestones:
90% of age 80+ have their first dose!! We cruised well past 50% fully vaxxed today!

65% of all adults with their 1st dose!

Eligibility:
1st dose - 12+
2nd dose - (NEW) 70+ OR vaccinated before March 15
New 2nd dose eligibility schedule
The 2nd dose schedule is for Pfizer and Moderna only. 2nd doses for AstraZeneca are coming. Sounds like they’re wanting to keep to 12 weeks between doses for maximum protection but waiting for official announcement.
Also, there’s been a definite uptick in 80+ people getting vaccinated with their 1st dose since they became eligible for their 2nd.

Increase in 1.3% over the last 7 days. That’s a greater increase than the 70-79 and 60-69 age group.

Messier: What the Hell? I did commercials and everything for them and I haven’t gotten anything!
Coffey: I have a job.

Nicholson: No you don’t. That was time limited. Just skills coach stuff.

Coffey: It was? You mean I’m not getting paid?

Nicholson: Just in wine.
Gretzky: So anyways, I’m leaving for another job.

One of the things about hockey is we tend to attribute stories that hinge on the smallest of bounces. An inch to the left or deflection is the difference between legendary hero and ultimate playoff choke.
Anyways, the series is 3-0 on the back of three 1 goal games (the first had two empty-netters) with the Oilers being the better team for most, but not all, of the periods.
This team is flawed and we knew that before the season started, let alone the playoffs.

However this plays out, it would be best to make decisions based on what we already knew of the team through the season, not the sample of the playoffs.

This is a great video by Dr. Napper, who is a @usask professor and headed up vaccine development at VIDO. He talks about vaccine development and how we were able to develop vaccines to COVID so fast!

One thing I didn't realize is how long it can take to find a suitable animal model for a particular virus. Like mice don't work well for COVID research. Sometimes that might take years. Because of previous research into SARS, we had a good idea of an animal model early.
Another thing I didn't realize was the extent of cooperation between different vaccine development groups. They had weekly calls at the WHO, sharing their results early. So when a good animal model was confirmed, they shared that globally instantly. Another way to fast-track.

What to do if you got the AstraZeneca vaccine:

1) Celebrate!

This is a very good vaccine! The UK is crushing COVID using a huge amount of AZ with extended dose intervals against a rapid spreading variant. We have real world evidence this vaccine works and protects you! This is legit awesome!
2) Take a breath. Clots remain very rare but you should be aware of the symptoms & seek help if necessary. This is a great infographic to help.

Once you’re ~4 weeks out, you’re in the clear for clot risk.

Damn that quote strikes home.
As I’ve tweeted about before, we’ve seen the same increase in Eating Disorders in Saskatchewan. @AyishaKurji and @hinz_tamara have done a lot of advocacy around this recently and over the last few months.
But what struck me (among other things in that article) was the description of how tough it was when they temporarily collapsed the Eating Disorder unit until the general child psych unit.

Because we’ve been managing our explosion WITHOUT an eating disorder unit at baseline!
