Of the 526k people in Ontario who contracted COVID-19, a much-loved friend is one of the 26k who required hospitalization. I am one of the lucky 14 million who has not caught it.

We were both thankful to get our AstraZeneca booster shots on Thursday.

AZ part deux feels so good, despite its perception as a lesser alternative to vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna.

The stigma is tied to a link between AZ and rare blood clots, which has led to a pause on 1st doses in Ont. after 16 cases, including a death still under investigation.

The clots are 10x more rare after a 2nd dose, hence the decision to proceed with them.

As restrictions ease with increasing vaccinations and fewer cases, those not vaccinated will remain at risk, particularly in occupational or geographic pockets where they gather in larger numbers, one infection control epidemiologist at U of T warned.

A federal vaccine advisory panel has changed its guidance on “mismatched” COVID-19 vaccines, giving provinces the green light to offer Canadians different vaccine combinations for first and second doses. thestar.com/politics/feder…
The advice means Canadians can now have a vaccine cocktail.

Those who initially got the AstraZeneca vaccine or its India-made COVISHIELD brand can follow up with an mRNA vaccine — either Pfizer-BioNTech’s or Moderna’s — as a second shot. thestar.com/politics/feder…
Those who got first doses of either mRNA vaccine — from Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech — may also receive either company’s vaccine as a second dose.
