If you respect this picture, take a moment to read my words (a thread).
Today isn't a day for me. For those of us who have seen war, devastation, and loss, we remember it or are affected by it every day of the year. This is a day for you, the person who hasn't seen it, to remember the cost of war's endeavor.
War destroys bodies, minds, emotions, relationships, and families. It is not glorious and we should take great care to consider the cost when deciding to conduct it. While there are brave men and women who will answer the call, that zeal should not be misused. Ever.
I remember my friends who died from the enemy. And I remember the friends who died by their own hands after intense suffering.
It can be terribly sad for Gold Star families to be forgotten over time. Please honor them and wish them happiness, kindness, and love. Do not forget the cost their family has made to fulfill acts of war. The cost lasts long after the war is over.
If you haven't been ravaged by war, then know it isn't a necessary experience for purpose, fulfillment, or happiness. I would ask you to use your freedom in the United States of America to live a wholesome, compassionate life. Help lift others up instead of bring them down.
Help heal suffering. Help yourself with self-compassion, gratitude, and love. Let this guide your actions.
As for me, a disabled Green Beret, I have hope for the future. I have been through many types of hell, but have healed along the way. I wish it had been faster, but I know now I am capable of being the man I dreamed about since I was a boy.
And that doesn't mean killing the bad guy or saving the good guys. It means finally being content with life. It means to overflow with love and express it in all my relationships, interactions, and endeavors.
And if I can do that after being blown apart, then I have hope all of you can too. And you don't need to see war to do it.
This life can be gone in an instant. Live and love well; it's the best way to memorialize this day.
