Open letter to @UBC in the following tweets regard the degree awarded to Father O'Grady
/1 As an Trondek Huch'in member of UBC convocation (BA class of 2008)and Lawyer I am deeply ashamed to discover that UBC awarded an Honourary Degree to Father O'Grady who was principal of the Kamloops Residential School the site of the rediscovery of child mass graves.
UBC must acting immediately to revoke this award and recognizes it was a mistake to have done so . It must also ask for forgiveness for this error.
/3UBC has always been an institution that has prided itself on its commitment to Indigenous People the growth of our nations, the revitalization of our Cultural and Languages. This work is undermined by award even if it was made in the past.
/4It serves to honour a man who was a no less then a Génocidaire. The continued recognition of this degree is deeply disputing
/5 call upon you to stand up for the principles of reconciliation and Indigenous Nationhood that our institution alumni and I have championed. The genocidal policy of Canada can not be honoured in such a matter. UBC commitment to it Indigenous partners and Almmui is undermined.
/6 At this point I have to question if I as a Tr'ondek Huch'in if I wish to remain associated with UBC I will take time to allow all to reflect on this decision
/7 I thank you for you time in this matter and trust you will continue to give it due consideration, Benjamin Bruce Warnsby BA in History and Political Science Class of 2008.
