Planning to go live at 11:30 on @LocalMemphis on the exhumation of removal of Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife from Health Sciences Park. One of leaders of #TakeEmDown901 planning news conference later today; we just got sound from Sons of Confederate Veterans leader.
This is a fluid story; more to come throughout day on air and online @LocalMemphis.
.@tamisawyer - who spearheaded #TakeEmDown901 movement - responded to exhumation of Nathan Bedford Forrest: "This is a full circle moment. This statue was built as a monument to the Confederacy and all it stood for including racial violence and slavery. (more)
More from @tamisawyer: "I am proud to be a descendent of slaves and one of the people responsible for ending the Confederacy’s reign of terror on our city. Good riddance."
I haven't been able to log the Sons Of Confederate Veterans sound but my videojournalist who was in on interview said that rep said the moving of the bodies of Nathan Bedford Forrest from Memphis is a good compromise and what the family's descendants wanted.
This is scene right now at base of former statue base of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest in Memphis’ Medical District. I’m live in minutes. Image
Larger Confederate flags just placed at statue/body removal site. As observation not opinion, some debris is also conspicuously only on the bricks of a mural of clinched fist set up last summer after George Floyd. Image
Lee Millar - Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesperson - said of the General Forrest/Mary Forrest bodies removal and transfer from Memphis to near Columbia, TN: "Should be someplace where he can be respected, protected and visited without any danger, which is not the case here."
Millar added: "Certainly having a cemetery was a detriment to developing it and then the Forrest family and the Sons of Confederate Veterans likewise wanted it moved someplace else, so it worked out that everyone was in agreement."
Van Turner - president of Memphis Greenspace which oversees park - added: "Hopefully this will be a win-win scenario for everyone, the Forrest family & those remains will have peace & we'll be able to have a park that will be able to be used by all the residents."
Turner added: "I think we did it the legal way, I think we did it the right way, the Sons and the Forrest family have worked with us to get matters resolved in court, which is the correct way of doing things."
Memphis media about to speak with #takeemdown901 founder @tamisawyer; recap from all sides at 5/6 @LocalMemphis.
Happening now at pedestal of former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest in Memphis.
Wider look at the process.... Image
Another piece is pulled away from pedestal...
More debris drop off.....
Things tense here.
Man yelling profanity @tamisawyer Image
Volatile moments continue.
Van Turner - a colleague of @tamisawyer - said because Memphis Greenspace owns fence around statue pedestal, asked Sons of Confederate Veterans to take down the Confederate flags.
DEVELOPING: @tamisawyer tells me she has filed a police report this afternoon following that interaction with that man earlier this afternoon.

Today on @LocalMemphis, I'll provide online, on air and Twitter updates as @SecretaryPete visits #Memphis to update #40MSRiverBridge construction, see worksite & meet with @FedEx leaders on impact the bridge's indefinite closure is having on freight, commerce and logistics.
On top of @SecretaryPete visit, @myTDOT also expected this week to provide detailed construction timeline on when bridge can reopen to traffic. Last month, TDOT and ARDOT leaders feared it could take months, not weeks, to safely reopen the bridge after extensive repairs.
For now, the older I-55 bridge is the only the Mississippi River crossing connecting Memphis & Arkansas. @ARTrucking said I-55 bridge now averages more than 66,000 daily vehicles - compared to 45,000 before I-40 bridge closure.

New details about @SecretaryPete visit to Memphis Thursday: He'll meet with FedEx leaders in morning and then tour #40MSRiverBridge and hold separate news conference in afternoon.
.@FedEx spokesperson said in email: “We are honored to host @SecretaryPete & and @USDOT for their roundtable discussion on infrastructure (Thursday)."
The visit by Secretary Buttigieg comes as the I-55 bridge in Memphis suffered a significant delay for second time in a week - including this morning - as #40MSRiverBridge faces indefinite closure for repairs.

At 5 & 6 @LocalMemphis, I'll recap Attorney General Bill Barr's visit in Memphis this afternoon, where he'll update with @MEM_PoliceDept recent results of #OperationLegend , an initiative launched in the Bluff City in August.
.@TheJusticeDept operation launched in Kansas City in July and later expanded to Memphis & other cities. It brings in temporary and permanent federal investigators to complement the Multi-Agency Gang Unit. Dozens of arrests announced by DOJ to date linked to Operation Legend.
The federal operation isn't without local detractors. The faith group MICAH in mid-August argued instead of more "federal interference", priority should be funding non-police first responders, like mental health specialists and community interventionists.

Just in from @ShelbyVote spokesperson: to date, about 25,000 absentee ballot requests received. All but 200 mailed to those voters. 13,582 of those requested ballots have been returned.
In 2016, about 8,000 absentee ballots requested TOTAL. Elections administrator with @ShelbyVote told me earlier this month they are preparing for possibly between 45,000 & 100,000 absentee ballot requests. To handle unprecedented count, @FedExForum will be used to count/scan.
Reminder: you have until October 27th in Shelby County and Tennessee to request an absentee ballot (if you are meet eligible criteria). #GoVoteTN

Happy Monday ! Heads up, #Arkansas ! Today is the first day you can take part in early voting.
In West Memphis, AR and Crittenden County, to prepare for more voters, the election commission added a second early voting site in WM which will be at the Eugene Woods Civic Center.
“90% of the early voters traditionally come from Marion and West Memphis, those two cities have about 85% of the total voting population in the county," Crittenden Co. Election Commissioner Frank Barton said last month. “The courthouse is the traditional voting site."
