A very happy birthday to entertainer Josephine Baker, born on this day in 1906. Baker had a huge list of achievements including being a French Resistance agent, a civil rights activist and the first black woman to star in a major movie. She also might have dated Frida Kahlo.
Although she was born in the USA, much of Baker's career took place in Europe due to racism in the country of her birth. In France, she was the most successful American entertainer.
Among her achievements in her career in Europe, she starred in silent movie Siren Of The Tropics, the first black woman lead in a major film; was often accompanied on stage by a cheetah; and was seen as an icon of the Jazz Age.
During the Second World War, she used her position as a famous entertainer to pass on vital information about the Nazis. She had privileged access at parties and overheard things, and was also in a position to travel around Europe, passing on information.
In 1951, a club in Miami invited this iconic performer for an engagement. Baker publicly refused, saying she would not play to a segregated audience. She won that battle, and played to a mixed audience at a sold-out run.
She went on to provide support to the US civil rights movement, and spoke alongside Martin Luther King at the March on Washington as the only official woman speaker.
In her personal life, Baker had four marriages to men, and several sexual relationships with women, including jazz artist Ada "Bricktop" Smith, novelist Colette, and quite possibly Frida Kahlo, who she met in 1939.
Honestly, a twitter thread can't even do justice to the phenomenal achievements of Josephine Baker. She was a trailblazer. Even in death she broke another record, being the only American-born woman to receive full French military honours at her funeral.

Joking aside, we'd like to take a moment to talk about how basic anatomical words like "vagina" get caught up in algorithms as obscene (and the very real struggle we face every day)
Organisations like us, who deal with gynaecological health and/or sex education, are constantly getting flagged by digital platforms and struggle with making ourselves heard. We live in a world where stigma and shame are a very real thing.
In the digital world, many moderation processes are automated. We've moved on a little from "the Scunthorpe problem", where an English town was blocked by rude word filters because it has one in the middle of it... But not by much.

HAPPY SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHDAY! Here at the VM, we love a good pun, but Will was the master of pussy puns. Today, we'd like to be the cool English teacher sitting backwards on the chair, and present to you an annotated guide to some of the Bard's best sneaked-in vagina jokes...

The word of the day is "mittelschmerz". Literally "middle pain", it's a feeling of pain when you ovulate. It happens about 14 days before your period, and about 20% of people report it happening occasionally or usually.
Mittelschmerz is felt in your lower abdomen as a sharp twinge or dull cramp. In some people it only lasts a minute, while others might feel it for a day or two. Sometimes you'll be able to notice which ovary it's coming from, as the pain will be towards one side.
It's usually not severely painful - if ovulation is very painful for you, see a doctor as it might be a symptom of endometriosis, or scarring from surgery or an STI.

Meet Realdo Colombo. In 1559, this Italian anatomist claimed to have discovered the clitoris, then promptly died (for unrelated reasons)
We'll start by saying that obviously, Colombo didn't discover the clitoris. Anyone with one probably noticed it was there, since it's RIGHT THERE.
It also wasn't like Colombo was the first anatomist to point out the clitoris - it was known since antiquity among Greek, Persian and Arabic anatomists, on account of it being RIGHT THERE.

On this day in 2015, the obscenity trial of artist Megumi Igarashi, known as Rokudenashiko ("good-for-nothing girl") began in Japan. Photo by Dayna Evans
Rokudenashiko's trial surrounded a controversial work of hers: a kayak based on her own vulva. AFPReuters/Eigo Shimojo
Rokudenashiko's work aims to destigmatise the manko - a Japanese term for vagina and vulva - by showing the anatomy in a light-hearted and playful way. She wanted to make the manko "casual and pop".

As Ramadan begins, let's celebrate a remarkable Muslim woman from history: Fatima al-Fihri, founder of the world's oldest university, al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco.
Fatima was born to a wealthy merchant family, who emigrated to Fez from modern-day Tunisia in the ninth century. Due to the untimely death of her father, Fatima inherited a vast amount of wealth. She vowed to use her fortune to build a mosque and learning centre for her community
Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university were founded in 859. The university is the longest-running degree-awarding higher education institution in the world. Image
