TGIF, folks! In the thick of 2 Chronicles in my AM reading where it begins the rapid succession of kings. Today’s segment covered the end of Solomon’s son Rehoboam’s life. 2 Chron 12:14 says, “Rehoboam did what was evil because he did not determine in his heart to seek the Lord.”
Looking back on a long journey through deserts & forests & mountains & seas & fires & ice storms, making war & making peace, making bad decisions & good, good decisions & bad, the Lord remained. He’s been the single consistent thing in my 6 decades. This morning I wrote to him,
“You are my Keeper, my Light, my Love. You are my joy...You have kept us...keep us still.” And he will. And here is the part that falls in our laps & what circles back to Rehoboam. Often it just comes down to determining in your heart that you ARE going to seek the Lord. Come
hell or high water. Come blessings abounding or skies of brass, you’re going to seek the Lord. You’ve made up your mind before next week’s crisis. 1 gift of being a person of faith advanced in years is that you know a present season of silence & spiritual chilliness is temporary.
God is no more distant from you than he was in your last spiritual high when every word of Scripture jumped off the page & whirled & twirled before it landed in your heart like a match to kindling and when it seemed like the Lord painted the sky every evening just for you.
He’s there. Sometimes you’ll look back on a dry, frustrating season of your life when your prayers echoed back to you mockingly in a howling wilderness & you’ll be able to see in hindsight how obvious he was. Other times you’ll look back & see nothing at all. He was still there.
Faithfulness, whether in a marriage or in parenting or in our vocation or occupation or in our worship and in our service, involves making some decisions in advance of temptations, crises, boredom, want and need. Determine in your heart to seek the Lord. Resolve. Decide. Choose.
Then just keep doing it.
The Lord is your Keeper. Keep seeking him and you will not only find him. You will also find your way.
