The map of #Assam, as we see toady has changed dramatically over time. Here's a mini-thread on the chronology of events.
The #AssamProvince of British included most parts of NE India & major parts of present day Bangladesh.
Parts of the #AssamProvince went to East Pakistan (Bangladesh) during the Partition of India in 1947.
As per the State Reorganisation Act of 1956, Assam Province with boundary unchanged became the State of Assam. The princely states of Manipur and Tripura became UTs.

Nagaland has its fair share of history and subsequently the areas under Naga Transitional Provisions Regulation were given statehood in 1963 according to the State of Nagaland Act, 1962.

In 1971, the Parliament of India passed the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 which conferred full statehood to Meghalaya in 1972.
The capital of Assam was shifted to Dispur and Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya.

Earlier in 1954 the frontier tracts (Balipara Frontier Tract & Sadiya Frontier Tract) bordering China along the MacMohan line of 1914 were reorganised as NEFA.
These areas became Arunachal Pradesh, a UT in 1972 & a full fledged state in 1987.

Mizoram was first carved out of Assam as an UT in 1972 and later a state in 1987.
Manipur and Tripura remained as Union Territories of India between 1956 until 1972, when they attained fully-fledged statehood.
