On this day, 7 June 1981, one of the most daring bombing missions in history took place. 8 Israeli Air Force F-16 bombed Iraqi nuclear reactor in al-Tuwaitha. This attack was the final blow to Sadam's nuclear program. Preparation for this Operation Opera started much earlier.
/1
Meticulous planning and clandestine operations by Mossad that included even information exchange with Iranians resulted in precise situation analysis which helped IAF planners to use all the weaknesses that Iraqi AD had. The route through KSA was carefully chosen...

/2
to exploits radar cover gaps in Iraqi AD culminating the precise timing when Iraqis are the most vulnerable-time for an evening meal when the radars & launchers crews are relaxed, turning off their radars. This repeating time frame became a pattern that was dully recorded.

/3
As per some sources, on 7 June al-Tuwaitha was defended with at least 3 2K12/SA-6 batteries combined with 2 ZSU 23/4 and 2 ZSU 57/2 batteries. Considerable AD asset (brigade-size) for a small geographic location. Some Strela -2 MANPADs were also present.

/4
During the first Iranian attack, on 30 September 1980. 1 SA-6 battery, 3 Roland SHORAD batteries, and 3-4 ZSU 23/4 and 57/2 defended the site.
After this attack, the AD was reinforced and defense in depth was established.

/5
The brigade-size defense is optimal for the high-value site defense. AD can also count on the interceptors. However, poor planning and execution with the repeated "patterns" contributed to that formidable defense on paper was easy to catch off guard and exploit the "crack".

/6
Not a single long-range Iraqi radar was able to pick up low flying F-16s while at the time of the attack, missile battery fire control radars 1S91 were turned off. Some ZSU-23/4 were on but that was not enough to initiate coordinated defense action.

/7
The crews manned their combat stations when Israeli planes were on the way back home. The Iraqi AD had failed to bring down even one plane and not one MiG had been scrambled. It was a repeat of the same sorry performance against the Iranians nine months earlier.

/8
Failure to protect the most valuable site as a consequence had the head of Iraq's Western Air Defense Zone, Colonel Fakhri Hussein Jaberall, and all officers above the rank of major executed (as per the press all battery commanders and possibly some lower ranks as well).

/9
Among the Israeli pilots who bombed the reactor was Iftach Spector, who on 8 June 1967 while flying Mirage III, attacked USN Liberty - "the day when Israel attacked the US"... just a day short of the anniversary.

/10
Interestingly, he was not a member of the original team but pulling his "connections" and as a base commander, he succeeded to be included. He was also the only one which 2 Mk-84 bombs missed the reactor building.

/11
Documentary movie about the raid:

This "Begin Doctrine" was repeated against the Syrian nuclear program in Operation Orchard on 6 September 2007.

When Israel attacked the US:

on 8 June 1967 Israeli Air Force jets and navy torpedo boats attacked the USS Liberty - "research" ship (actually a spy ship) that was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 47 km northwest of the Egyptian city of Arish.

/1
Prior to the attack, Israeli recce planes flew over the ship and clearly identified it.

The combined attacks hat follow was executed by 2 Mirage III, 2 Mystère IV and 3 torpedo boats.

/2
Mirages (piloted by Iftach Spector and Moshe Oren attacked the ship with a cannon fire killed 8 and wounded 75. After them, a pair of Mystère IV (Yossi Zuk and Yaakov Hamermish) bombed the ship with napalm.

Few stills from recently published Hamas video: inground rudimentary built launcher. Shaped metal case to slide the rocket in with grooves to release the motor blast. There is no point of any precision, rather a rough angle dig in direction of a particular Israeli target.

/1
A little bit of trigonometry to get the approximate launching angle, cover to protect against IDF surveillance, small shop welded "launching tube" and few guys to dig. It can be many hundreds of these inground launchers all around and in Gaza.

/2

recent Hamas propaganda video 👇
The "crew" covers the launcher to protect from IDF surveillance. IDF most likely pinpoint the place (for example by IR camera) and bomb it, but to co-op with that, launchers are position in a wider area.

With this, every bit of clear space is a potential launcher area.

The Iron Dome missile guidance shall bring the missile to the optimal engagement position. The interceptors missile don’t hit the incoming rockets directly, rather explode very close to them. The detonation is triggered by the interceptor rocket’s proximity fuse.

/1
To be successful, the Iron Dome missile needs to destroy the incoming rocket warhead. Hits in the back-end (rocket motor section), do not affect the outcome of the engagement because the warhead will fall and the explode which can be anywhere along the trajectory.

/2
For the defender, if the calculated impact point is disrupted, it is often presented as a successful intercept, but in reality if the warhead explode anywhere in Gaza or Israel (and cause the casualties) it can't be counted toward the successful interception rate.

WWII in Europe officially ended 23:01 on 8 May. The Soviet Union celebrates Victory Day on 9 May, as the end of operations occurred after midnight Moscow time. Nazi Germany was crushed by the Soviet forces who took the largest brunt but the Nazi virus escaped Berlin...

/1 ImageImageImageImage
... escaped virus took ratlines, mutated, took different shapes, streams... embedding itself in the politics and political parties, hiding behind the policies, organizations, institutions, banks... it change the uniforms, the languages... popping up from time to time...

/2 ImageImageImageImage
... after some time it reappeared openly... firstly in one small area in the Balkans, then started more on the east... for this virus, there is a vaccine, but the mutated virus took the vaccine "manufacturers" and embedded itself in the governments and treaties...

New 🇺🇦 AD system "Кильчень" (Kilchen) is proposed by design bureau "Южное" (Yuzhnoe). According to Yuzhnoe, the system will have several command posts and some of them will be located in virtual "clouds". The price of the system will be 1/4 or 1/3 of the price of Patriot.

/1
The developer claim that such virtual CP system is almost impossible to destroy with conventional weapons. The typical unit may consist of 4-6 TEL. Each TEL has 4 missiles with a maximum range of 280 km. AD includes 🇺🇦 OEM detection and targeting X, C and S-band radars.

/2
Theoretically, AD system can simultaneously engage 12 targets of which can be 6 ballistic (guiding 4 missiles per target) or up to 16 aerodynamic targets (guiding 2 missiles per target). AD system will use an active millimeter-wave radar homing head.

Seem that the situation is escalating in Donbas on an hourly basis... Intensive artillery on both sides. Russian media reported Kirovsk, Bryanka, and Stahanov. Air activities near Chuguev, Ukr helicopters flying toward Donetsk.
This may be the sign of a wider attack but also can be the counterbattery fire (which is not unusual). Lare calibers are involved, based on the sounds of detonation and explosion flashes.
Besides this, still, there is the hope of de-escalation if common sense prevails.
Looks that in the Donetsk area mostly 120 mm mortars were fired. Easy to fire then change the position fast, then open fire again.
