“I want to clean up Los Angeles while being respectful to the unhouse,” says @JoeBuscaino as he launches his campaign for mayor of Los Angeles. He’s announcing a three point plan for “a safer Los Angeles.”
His 3 point plan: 1. Cut red tape to build housing faster 2. Get rid of LAHSA and build new system 3. Enforcement that bans encampments at parks, beaches and sidewalks
“Homelessness is an emergency in the city of Los Angeles.”
A man is now attempting to interrupt the presser.
Breaking: Private security working for @JoeBuscaino interrupted the event when they noticed this woman holding a knife near the mayoral candidate. LAPD officers detained her and you can clearly see the weapon in this video. Buscaino has been told it’s unsafe to stay here and left
Update: LAPD Captain Umbrich says the woman was arrested and likely will be charged with aggravated assault. They are getting witness testimony that she made at least one threat while holding the knife.
Update via @boreskes that Captain Umbrich was apparently cut by the knife. (He didn’t mention that to me when I talked to him right after the incident.)
In the background of this clip, you can see mayoral candidate @JoeBuscaino jump onto and then over the wall surrounding the Venice beach parking lot and then take off running while @LAPDHQ officers detain the woman holding the knife.
Venice resident Nico Ruderman says he locked eyes with the woman who said “I’m going to start killing people.” He took off running with @JoeBuscaino.
Ruderman came to listen to the speech and is behind the campaign to recall @mikebonin.
Private security said they noticed the woman drop the knife as @JoeBuscaino met with potential supporters. You can see the moment in the lower left corner of this video I recorded minutes before she was detained by LAPD.
Update: jail records show the 19-year-old woman was booked on a misdemeanor charge around 3:18 p.m. and released at 4:36 on her own recognizance. Her court date is in October.

Breaking: Special counsel report calls deputy gangs a 'cancer' inside the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department following a historic series of investigative hearings in 2022.
Breaking: Sheriff’s deputies are taking boxes from Civilian Oversight Commissioner Patty Giggin’s Los Angeles home, part of a sprawling investigation that includes Metro and Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. The COC has held a series of investigative hearings into alleged gangs in LASD.
Giggin’s lawyer Austin Dove confirms detectives took a computer, flash drives and an “Official Police Tow” just showed up to take her car.
“This is harassment!” Giggins says. Dove says that is not in the warrant. Tensions escalate.
Giggin’s lawyer provided this photo of four of the twelve deputies who searched her home. More showed up at her office where staff says they seized servers from Peace Over Violence meaning the non-profit cannot function. The Metro contract under investigation ended in December.
In a stunning moment, Los Angeles Co Sheriff Alex Villanueva revealed LASD is investigating his political opponent @Vera4Sheriff, the Inspector General and LA Times reporter @AleneTchek, after leaked video exposed a deputy kneeling on a handcuffed inmate's head. @SpecNews1SoCal
The incident has been handed over to District Attorney @GeorgeGascon, who will ultimately decide whether Douglas Johnson's use of force was illegal. You can read. @AleneTchek's important work here:
That’s the voice of @StoltzeFrankly pressing the Sheriff on this and then the follow up from @FoxPhil that he should take questions from Alene at the press conference.
NEW: An East LA deputy alleges a hostile work environment and "unrelenting" harassment by the #Banditos deputy gang in 2019. Deputy Robert Coyle says he was given "freeway therapy" when he requested to be transferred away and then moved to the jails when he sued. @SpecNews1SoCal
In the court docs, Coyle says the #Banditos gave him excessive calls for service and then withheld back up. He also alleges that other deputies assumed because he "was white, he must be an undercover FBI agent and harassed him."
I reached out to LASD but haven't heard back...I'll update the thread when they get back to me.
Here setting up to cover a press conference with @LAPDChiefMoore and the ATF regarding the #LAPDblast in South Central LA that displaced 70+ people and severely damaged several homes and businesses. @SpecNews1SoCal
Chief Moore begins and apologizes for this outdoor presser that will be long and hot
“I want to personally express my apologies” to everyone effected. “I am sorry that this occurred. Additionally, I acknowledge that there are many others traumatized by the blast.” says @LAPDChiefMoore who says his officers “acted in good faith.”
THREAD: It's been *checks calendar* a month following housing efforts on the Venice Beach Boardwalk as @mikebonin's "Encampment to Home" program progresses to the most complicated structures (and people) living along Ocean Front Walk.

Robert moved into the Bridge Home shelter in Venice five weeks ago and is now receiving medical treatment for conditions he developed on the street. The swelling that makes walking painful is from sleeping in his wheelchair.
