On Monday, the Securities and Exchange Board of India came out with two orders, holding Franklin Templeton India guilty of serious lapses in the way it ran its fixed income schemes and a senior executive guilty of failing to perform his fiduciary duty.

The AMC has been held guilty of doing bare minimum in terms of adhering to the spirit of SEBI norms and having one-sided deals with corporates at the expense of investors. Its strategy of investing in securities that were bespoke, opaque and high risk played a large part.
The capital markets regulator has barred the fund house from launching any new debt scheme for a period of two years, levying a penalty of Rs 5 crore on it for various infractions and directed it to refund the monies collected as fund management fees along with interest.
SEBI’s order is a warning to the country’s mutual fund industry. The caution is not just for the funds and the practices that they pull off by adding a footnote with an asterix that says “mutual funds are subject to market risks”, but also a reminder to investors.
SEBI’s action holds out hope that investors’ interests, which it is supposed to safeguard, are not at the mercy of risk-happy fund managers. It tells investors that the fate of 300,000 FT investors is not the rule. It’s the exception.

Paytm heading for an IPO is indeed a very big deal. But important questions got sidestepped in the din of euphoria. How exactly does Paytm make money and has the company been doing well lately? Why is Paytm coming to the public markets this year?

themorningcontext.com/internet/the-m…
From e-commerce to games to payments to loans, there’s a lot under Paytm's corporate umbrella. Three things that stand out from its corporate journey are: (a) the digital wallet, payments and financial services (b) payments bank business (c) e-commerce business, Paytm Mall
Trying to assess these businesses independently can lead to a wild goose chase. That’s because Paytm’s related-party transactions among these three businesses and its numerous other subsidiaries and JVs is a maze, making it difficult to ascertain actual income and loss.

It’s been over a month since the consortium of Murari Lal Jalan and Kalrock Capital, which won the bid for Jet Airways, signed an MoU with an airline from Middle East.

But what’s stopping them from announcing the deal is a crucial issue is to be settled.

themorningcontext.com/business/is-go…
The problem is a gaping hole in the resolution plan, which the consortium submitted before the NCLT for its approval. It has to do with slots, or their absence. An airline needs slots to land at and take off from an airport. Without slots, an airline cannot fly.
On the table are plans to start Jet Airways 2.0 off with cargo operations as early as September, which will see it instantly generate cash, and then gradually get into the passenger segment. The latter will include flights between metros, and to tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
