I recently invested some $$ in Bitcoin.

Here's why 🧵
First, why did it take me so long to buy?

I hadn’t taken the time to research BTC myself.

Never make a decision just because a bunch of people on Twitter tell you to.

Use loud voices as a sign to do research, not make decisions.
Second, I spent 30 hours researching prior to pulling the trigger. Why?

1) If I lost my investment it would definitely sting.

2) I think of Bitcoin as a gateway drug to other applications of blockchain technology.
So, why am I buying Bitcoin now?

The logic goes as follows...
Assumption 1:

Investors will seek a store of value as inflation goes up.

With inflation, $1 today will be worth less tomorrow.

Having an instrument to preserve the value of your dollar is important for wealth preservation.
Assumption 2:

Gold is the traditional store of value, but there are limitations.

In physical form, gold is illiquid & cumbersome to store.

In financial form, gold suffers from third-party risk.
Assumption 3:

There will be appetite for a new store of value.

- One that is trustless & doesn't rely on any one person or institution

- One that is built for the digital age we live in
Assumption 4:

Bitcoin has the best chance of being that new store of value

It has reached a critical mass of trust.

Trust—not intrinsic value—will determine the next store of value.

And Bitcoin has a head start in achieving narrative-driven value.
These four assumptions are why I bought Bitcoin.

But what are the risks?
1) Trust

Bitcoin will live or die based on trust.

2) Environmental concerns

Smart people have said it's bad for the environment.

Others have said it's good.

I still need to do more homework on this one.

3) Government regulation

Obv China, but other countries as well.
Given the risks, what's my overall conviction level?

8/10

Could that conviction change over time?

Absolutely.

As I learn more about Bitcoin, blockchain, and what drives economies, it undoubtably will change.
I'm not a Bitcoin expert nor do I hope to make you a bull.

I just wanted to share my approach for making an investment decision.

And I welcome any questions & feedback that drive productive conversation around Bitcoin as an investment.

Who you surround yourself with is who you become.

9 steps for optimizing your circle 🧵
Step 1: grab 2 sheets of paper and a pen/pencil/sharpie Image
Step 2: on first sheet, make a list of your 10-20 closest personal connections

For me, this includes:

- Mom
- Girlfriend
- @austin_rief (co-founder)
- @SahilBloom (friend)

I get to 17 connections on my list.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with"

This old adage is wrong in two BIG ways.

Here's why👇
First, the number is wrong.

Five should be more like 50.

Today, far more than five things influence who you are and who you'll become.
That's thanks to the internet.

It has unlocked connection truly unbundling the human experience.

What was Town Square is now Twitter.

What was University is now YouTube.

What was the local bar is now Clubhouse.

31% of all adults will experience an anxiety disorder in their life.

Yet only 36.9% receive treatment.

That's why talking about it & destigmatizing it is so important.

Time to share my experience with anxiety & how I cope 🧵
I've struggled with anxiety for my entire life.

As I've evolved, my anxiety has evolved.

But the feelings from it have remained constant.
Pressure on my chest like a 10lb dumbbell is resting on it.

Shortness of breath like I'm inhaling & exhaling through a straw.

Inability to focus because the distraction of my anxiety is all-encompassing.

Everyone has an opinion.

Some opinions are great.

Others are crap.

Having a strategy to sift through peoples' opinions is a must in your career...
For starters, I listen to everyone's opinion.

You never know where a gem of info will come from.

Don't close off your top of funnel unnecessarily.
But determining which opinions to adopt or act on is a different story.

I have THREE criteria for properly vetting the opinions of others:

I studied 7 world-class performers over the weekend.

They all have remarkable stories to tell.

Here's 1 fact, 1 lesson, 1 quote from each of them...
1. Daniel Ek (Spotify CEO)

1 FACT: By mistake, NYSE hung a Swiss flag instead of Swedish flag at IPO

1 LESSON: Creativity & structure are not mutually exclusive

1 QUOTE: “We led with our conviction rather than [being] rational, because rational said it was impossible” Image
2. Dwayne Johnson (The Rock)

1 FACT: Highest paid actor in 2020 at $87.5 million

1 LESSON: You can be highly successful without conceding on family

1 QUOTE: “All successes begin with self-discipline. It starts with you” Image
