So heres a super local issue that I want people to be aware of: In Peabody MA, they’re building a 60-megawatt gas powered plant that local politicians swear they knew NOTHING about. The company building it is called MMWEC and it was approved (by someone..?) in 2015. (THREAD)
The idea of using gas power in 2021 when we’ve had effective alternatives for so long is alarming but even more so is the complete lack of accountability. The mayor @TedBettencourt says that @PeabodyLight (the Peabody Municipal Light Plant) “operates independently” from the city
How is that even possible?!?!?!? 😡😡
A local climate action group called Breathe Clean North Shore along w/ @ComActionWorks holds regular zoom meetings in which multiple state senators and reps have joined and claimed they were unaware of this project until recently and said there was no vote held in their chamber
Here’s my state senator @SenJoanLovely celebrating the company responsible for the plant while seemingly trying to trick people into thinking that the company promotes green energy???
The gaslighting (pun intended) continues on MMWEC’s website with pictures of green windmill and solar panel drawings when it is literally gas powered
We have no answers as to how this was approved, or who approved it and whether or not local officials are being honest about their lack of involvement because their is no requirement for transparency in voting records in Massachusetts
If you are passionate about the climate crisis, especially if you are local, please DM me or get in contact with Breathe Clean. facebook.com/BreatheCleanNS We need more people involved in stopping the construction of this plant and demanding answers from politicians.
I would love to see @sunrisemvmt@SunriseBoston get involved if they aren’t already. Please like/retweet this thread or send it to someone you know in this area to get the word out. Thank you!! 😊❤️🌳
Special shoutout to my state rep @sallykerans4rep for being outspoken on this issue and for encouraging people to get on these calls and participate in preventing this project

LETS TALK ABOUT NEERA TANDEN. As of right now, we don’t know whether she has been/ will be confirmed but here’s a THREAD 🧵 on why she absolutely shouldn’t be:
As Bernie Sanders said yesterday, her organization CAP has accepted $38M from corporate America and I believe this money has corrupted her, full stop.
When Faiz Shakir asked Hillary Clinton about her role in the Iraq War, Neera was so outraged that she punched him backstage. When asked about this she said “I just pushed him,” as if either is acceptable.
Dear liberals, many of you have said things along the lines of "It's Biden's first week, he's already done great things, what's the issue with progressives?" In the case that this is a genuine question rather than rhetorical condescension, here's a thread on what our "issue," is
WHERE'S THE CHECKS? Over and over we heard Dem senate = instant $2K checks. Then it turned into $1,400, now even that number will go to negotiations with the GOP because Biden fetishizes bipartisanship when he doesn't need to. This can be passed with budget reconciliation TODAY.
WHERE'S THE COVID PLAN? "Trump has no plan for covid, I do." Sound familiar? Now Biden says "There's nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the virus." What? There's a hell of a lot of things we can do and we have to remind him of that as we approach 500k Covid deaths.
Ok liberals, you said that we should "elect Biden and then push him left."
Step 1 is complete, now it's time for step 2.
Here is a thread of reasons why Medicare For All is the correct policy and why it is the best thing to push Biden to do.
WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC: If there is a time to push to make healthcare a human right, its now. Ppl of all income levels need to be able to go to the doctor without fear of not having enough money in their pocket/going bankrupt, especially when we're dealing with a contagious virus.
WE NEED TO SEPERATE HEALTH FROM EMPLOYMENT: The pandemic has showed us in real time how disastrous it is for people to rely on their employer for healthcare because pandemics cause people to lose their job at the most vital time for them to stay healthy.
If a $15 minimum wage was to hurt small business’ it would be because those business’ were already so damaged by huge multinational corporations that monopolized entire industries like Amazon and Walmart. If you wanna talk about broadening the economic agenda (Thread)
that addresses inequality in our economy to include legislation that benefits small business’ I’m all for it. What I don’t have time for is this circular reasoning bullshit that says we have no choice but to stick with unfettered capitalism because -
we are already living with the consequences of decades of unfettered capitalism. If we banned corporate monopolies or at the very least banned them from creating chains in certain areas, the mom and pop stores in those places would thrive and could very easily -
