With this week's investigation into the poisoning of Dmitry Bykov, Bellingcat has now published about 6 individuals followed by the FSB's assassination squad, 3 of which whom fell into comas while being followed, and 3 whom died under mysterious circumstances while being followed
The first investigation looked at the August 2020 poisoning of Alexey @Navalny, who was followed dozens of times by the FSB assassination squad before he fell into a coma in August 2020 bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
This investigation included @Navalny calling up one of the team identified by Bellingcat, and posing as an assistant to one of the team member's superiors, extracting detailed information on how the operation was executed from the hapless agent bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
Our next investigation showed that it wasn't just high profile political activists being followed, and examined the mysterious deaths of 3 lesser known political activists while they were being followed by the FSB assassination squad bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
Boris Nemstov ally Vladimir Kara-Murza fell into comas twice, in 2015 and 2017, both times while being tailed by the FSB assassination squad, demonstrating that they would repeatedly attempt to kill individuals. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
The sixth target identified is Dmitry Bykov, a Russian poet, who displayed symptoms that were very similar to Navalny's before falling into a coma after being followed by the same FSB assassination squad in 2019.
bellingcat.com/news/2021/06/0…
While we generally focus on open source material the extraordinary nature of these events required us to look at more unusual sources, which we describe in this article bellingcat.com/resources/2020…
Based on our current work it is very likely many more individuals have been targeted by the same team, and demonstrate a widespread use of assassination inside Russia by the Russian government targeting individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.
It is noteworthy that we discovered this FSB assassination squad after previously identifying Russia's secret nerve agent programme, run in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention that Russia is a member of. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
That programme was linked to more Russian assassinations, this time the GRU's Unit 29155, which targeted Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, and Emilian Gebrev in Bulgaria. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
The same GRU unit was also linked to explosions in Czechia, and other subversive activity across Europe. bellingcat.com/news/2021/04/2…
And that's not to mention the FSB assassinations taking place in Europe, such as the Berlin bicycle assassination. The suspect in the case is now on trial in Berlin. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
This assassination was also linked to even more assassinations, with another target of the same team identified in Istanbul. In total that's a lot of assassinations, and that's just the ones we know about. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
There's still a lot of data to work through, and more cases of mysterious illnesses and deaths that we discover on a disturbingly frequent basis, and over time we're building a fuller picture of the extent of these assassination programmes.

New — Popular Russian poet, Dmitry Bykov was tracked by the same squad of FSB operatives that tailed Alexey Navalny prior to his poisoning, including shortly before he fell seriously ill from a sudden mysterious illness.
bellingcat.com/news/2021/06/0…
Bykov fell ill on a flight in 2019 with symptoms similar to those experienced by Navalny. On that trip, and multiple previous trips, Bykov was followed by FSB operatives involved with the poisoning of @Navalny.
Dmitry Bykov is a well-known Russian writer, poet and journalist. Renowned as a literary critic, educator and a satirist, he often churns out satirical poems that provide acerbic social commentary on current events and on the political regime.

US soldiers stationed on European bases that host nuclear weapons have exposed a multitude of sensitive security details -- including where weapons are stored & secret duress words -- by using flashcard learning apps that appear publicly in online searches bellingcat.com/news/2021/05/2…
While the presence of US nuclear weapons in Europe has long been detailed by various leaked documents, photos and statements by retired officials, their specific locations are officially still a secret with governments neither confirming nor denying their presence.
As many campaigners see it, this ambiguity has often hampered open and democratic debate about the rights and wrongs of hosting nuclear weapons in some European nations.

There have been two major developments regarding our joint investigation examining pushback of refugees on the borders of the European Union by @Frontex, which we undertook with our partners @LHreports, @derspiegel, @ARD_Presse and @tv_asahi_news
The first is that legal action is being taken by @LexFront, @ProgressLawyers and Greek Helisnki Monitor against Frontex in the @EUCourtPress, due to allegations of Human Rights violations in the Aegean Sea.

Their case draws "heavily" on our reporting.

The second is that reporting by @derspiegel shows Frontex’s own human rights watchdog believes that our reporting on this issue is based on “solid evidence”.

What can geocoded tweets tell us about the rapid spread and impact of Covid-19 in South Asia?

New from @obtusatum bellingcat.com/resources/2021…
@obtusatum By combining the results of many geocoded queries, Bellingcat was able to make an approximate map of the geographic distribution of tweets looking for urgent assistance across India and its South Asian neighbours, many of which are experiencing their own coronavirus crises
@obtusatum India in particular has experienced a dramatic recent rise in Covid-19 cases, as we explored previously bellingcat.com/news/2021/04/2…

Establishing the time within a video or image can be a difficult and frustrating task for open source researchers.

But as @N_Waters89 explains, measuring shadows can offer a solution. bellingcat.com/resources/2021…
@N_Waters89 Assessing the angle of shadows is already a relatively widely used technique that can help gauge when an a video or image or video was taken. Tools like SunCalc are a huge help when employing this method.

But what about when the angle of a shadow can’t be established?
@N_Waters89 Luckily, if the conditions are right, the length of a shadow can be analysed to provide similar info

Berlin Group 21 recently raised concerns about the OPCW and its investigation into the Douma attack, garnering signatures for a “Statement of Concern”

But it has since faced questions about relations with another group known for conspiracy theories bellingcat.com/news/2021/05/1…
Last month Newlines magazine reported that BG21, which was set up by two former diplomats and an Ivy League academic, was a “front” organisation for another body, the Working Group on Syria, Propaganda and the Media (WGSPM) newlinesmag.com/reportage/how-…
An email sting earlier this year, meanwhile, saw a member of the WGSPM boast of arranging media coverage for BG21 to an individual he mistakenly took to be a Russian intelligence officer.
