With Covid-19 vaccines authorized for adults and teens, the FDA is now working to make sure the vaccines are safe and effective for younger children.

Here are the three main issues the FDA panel considered at its meeting today 🧵
politico.com/news/2021/06/1…
1. Safety:
The committee mainly focused on assessing whether the vaccines are safe for children.

One big consideration for regulators: Children's developing immune systems appear to react to Covid-19 differently than do those of adults.

2. Measuring efficacy:
Vaccine efficacy trials compare the number of infections in participants who got the shot to those who got a placebo.

But kids are less prone to symptomatic Covid, so a pediatric vaccine trial could take longer. politico.com/news/2021/06/1…
3. How Covid vaccines mix with routine childhood shots:
People get most of their vaccinations during childhood. FDA asked its advisory panel for thoughts on whether kids should be able to get Covid vaccines alongside routine childhood immunizations. politico.com/news/2021/06/1…

An upset loss in New Mexico would be catastrophic for a few reasons. Most importantly, Nancy Pelosi desperately needs the vote to pad her narrow majority. This would give her four to spare. politi.co/2RSqCrV

Empty airports. Full delivery trucks. When the pandemic hit, our infrastructure needs changed 🧵 politi.co/3foRIzv
One of the most severely affected parts of the economy was passenger travel. Public transit ridership, in particular, saw a steep downturn politi.co/3foRIzv
The pandemic also took a big bite out of air travel. The number of commercial flights was nearly halved from what it was in 2019. politi.co/3foRIzv

Advocates say the new hate crimes law is a big step.

But there’s a problem: Many big police departments don’t report whether a crime was motivated by bias to federal authorities. And state governments often disagree on what a hate crime even is. 🧵
politico.com/interactives/2…
In 2020, nearly a quarter of big cities didn’t report a single hate crime, a statistical near-impossibility.

More than 11 million people live in these cities, which include Baltimore, Savannah, Ga., and Norfolk, Va. politi.co/3ylNMY1
There are a number of reasons for the gap in reporting, experts say. People are generally reluctant to report hate crimes and many police departments also lack the training — or the political will — to properly identify and report hate crimes. politi.co/3ylNMY1
