This week, we have @whatallydid from the Dark 'n' Light team recommending a book that helped her crawl out of a reading slump. Here's her battered but very beloved copy of the book.
“During lockdown, I found myself unable to process new information. I had a stack of books next to my bed that perpetually threatened to crush me in my sleep and no motivation to read. I slowly reclaimed my reading habit by returning to familiar friends.
One of the greatest of these is Terry Pratchett. If you haven't read his Discworld books, you're in for a treat. I'm almost jealous that you'll get to read them for the first time.I bought this book a few days before my 12th grade final exams.
I was supposed to be at a tuition class, but my brain refused to compute, and I had skived off to hide in a bookshop. Lurking in the fantasy section, I asked a friend (and fellow Pratchett acolyte) for recommendations.
"I think you're going to love the Night Watch," he said. "Start with Men at Arms." So I did. He's right, I did love the Night Watch, the crew of misfit police who patrol the streets of Ankh-Morpork, the greatest city in the Discworld.
@whatallydid: It was also a masterclass in balancing humour, world-building, satire and plain silliness. It was like the top of my head had blown off.
No one but Pratchett could take magic, the broken criminal justice system, racism, gender and sexuality, body horror and more, and make it genuinely, rib-breakingly hilarious.
@whatallydid: Pratchett not only influenced my writing style, but how I viewed the world in all it's chaotic glory. So, please read it and share my joy!”
