Pretty notable that two freelancers won @PulitzerPrizes this year for feature writing, but one of them was for a magazine that was shut down. Freelancing is often incredibly difficult to financially manage. I hope the award gives them the recognition and breathing room they need.
Also they should be paid a minimum of $3/word and/or be offered decent staff jobs with full benefits.
I stopped freelance writing and reporting about crime, media, and entertainment because I couldn't figure out how to make the money work while juggling pitching and bookkeeping. It's really tough for a lot of people. I am in awe of the winners for their perseverance and talent.

logging onto Ticketmaster to get tickets for the Big MSG Concert and learning I have spent 15 years using that website and being mad about its various fees
Will a $50 ticket be closer to $90? With Ticketmaster, who knows. Budgeting is useless. Less than a minute left before sales under the monopoly start. (I will also buy merch, obvs)

I don't know how to talk about the situation in Canada but any white person who says the murders in London are not reflective of the country 1. isn't acknowledging its history 2. clearly hasn't talked to or listened to the people who experience racism on a regular basis
The experiences of Muslim folks, Indigenous folks, Black folks, anyone who had a relative who was in the internment camps, the hate crimes, plus the comments the literal leader of the NDP has received. Look at what gets tweeted and RTed by the Conservative Party. It's all there.
I don't know how to convince white people in power that non-white people aren't exaggerating their concerns and how much of a toll racism has on a daily basis, incl the energy spent worrying about safety, discrimination at work, hate crimes, pay gaps, various government policies.

Honestly booking on the CVS website was very easy, involved no CAPTCHAs, and I did it immediately after waking up.

Interest in the very large boat in the Suez Canal confirms 1. how many people need better hobbies and 2. lack of general understanding of global trade routes
I took a graduate-level class on operations management and supply chains in 2017 and became instantly confused why every business reporter isn't taught it or given a copy of The Goal their first week on the job
fwiw, I also need better hobbies and I loved all the memes

if you're still doomscrolling, try not to stay up too late

This NYTimes media column is really about an institution that operates on deeply exclusionary operating conditions very few people can afford, and who enables it to continue doing so. ImageImage
Nicole Cliffe has justifiably yeeted herself off this website again, otherwise she would appropriately mention how she personally paid the three Harper's interns herself so they could pay their rents and not starve.

The thing about ongoing comments about hopescrolling is a lot of people are still getting sick and dying from Covid-19; lots of people are still unemployed or struggling with cut hours; and the Asian community is still reeling from the Atlanta massacre and rise in hate crimes.
A large majority of people who make comments to me about joyscrolling or hopescrolling does not have to worry about their risk of hate crimes or the disproportionate risk of getting sick or dying from Covid-19 due to their race.
