Clippers - Jazz Game 3 Thread:

Every NBA game seems to begin at least 10 minutes after the scheduled start time, which means LA gets going at least another 5 minutes thereafter. Utah strikes first, again, 8-0.
Utah ended up with nothing to show for it, but this was a great pass by Donovan Mitchell. Kawhi and Paul George trapped, yet Mitchell was able to identify the open shooter and deliver a difficult two-handed overhead pass to Joe Ingles, who had a good look but missed.
My bad on the previous tweet: the shooter was Bojan Bogdanovic.
Shot distribution continues to favor Utah. After Q1, more than half of the Jazz’s shots have come from 3. With the Clippers, it’s under a third. They also have just one trip to the free throw line, as they’re forced into a lot of midrange jumpers.
Nice Gortat screen by Ivica Zubac to free up Paul George — one of the limited shots at the rim by the Clippers thus far.
Kawhi’s been uncharacteristically inefficient to start the game, but this was a brilliant steal from Donovan Mitchell, who was in the midst of hot shooting. Vintage Klaw.
Paul George’s up to 20 points on 14 true shot attempts, including 4-5 from deep. He started off lackluster, but has picked it up. With him, especially in this series, it’s less about efficiency than aggression. Just keep shooting and attacking.
This is the benefit of an aggressive Paul George. He attacks Donovan Mitchell in transition and draws Rudy Gobert, allowing Nic Batum to cut and get an open dunk.
In the first half, Donovan Mitchell (16), Joe Ingles (14), and Jordan Clarkson (11) accounted for 41 of Utah’s 49 points (84%). The Jazz will need to find a way to get the others involved offensively.
The Jazz are down by 15 and have a below-average true shooting percentage (54%) — and that’s with more than half of their shots from deep, where they converted 48%. The offense needs to diversify. They had just 1 trip to the line in the first half.
In the first half, besides efficient shooting, the Clippers grabbed 7 offensive boards (32% OREB rate) and committed just 2 turnovers. They had an edge over the Jazz in these two factors.
It’s always a sight to behold when Kawhi is active on defense. He can be really disruptive.
Here’s the advantage of the Clippers small-ball lineup in full display. With Nic Batum in the slot, Rudy Gobert can’t drop like he normally would. That causes just enough of a hesitation on Kawhi’s drive to give him a clean dunk.
Through 3 games, the Clippers have outscored the Jazz by 17, although they’re down 2-1 in the series.

Jazz - Clippers, Game 4 Thread:

LA has finally found the quick start that’s largely been eluding them during the playoffs. Defensively, the switches and rotations have been crisper than in the first three games. Note how they play this pick-and-roll to get the steal.
Another excellent defensive possession for the Clippers. They switch the first action well and are in great position, particularly Nicolas Batum, who’s between the slot and the corner on the weakside. He’s able to disrupt and force another live-ball turnover.
If the Clippers are going to go mismatch hunting, they’ll need better looks than what they got here. Marcus Morris Sr has Jordan Clarkson in the post yet settles for a fadeaway. That’s a bad shot, especially with such little ball and player movement throughout the play.

My NBA Calendar app now reflects the 1st part of the 2020-21 regular season. The Heat have the most games (10) in which they have a true rest advantage over the opponent, meaning they are entering the game rested while the other team is on a back-to-back. positiveresidual.com/shiny/nba/
The Rockets' 5 back-to-backs is tied for the fewest in the league alongside the Lakers, Raptors, and Heat. positiveresidual.com/shiny/nba/
The Knicks have the most games in which they have a true rest disadvantage, meaning they are on the second leg of a back-to-back while their opponent is rested. cc: @JeffreyBellone positiveresidual.com/shiny/nba/

The entire game came down to 18 seconds. I have no words.
It took 18 seconds for the Dodgers to go from an 83% win expectancy and a 3-1 series lead to a loss and a 2-2 tie. Eighteen seconds.
This was the exact moment when Max Muncy caught Chris Taylor’s throw and turned toward home. Randy Arozarena was on the ground not even halfway to the plate. There’s no way this should have resulted in a run in a major league game, let alone the World Series.

I would rather have an MLB where Mike Trout having 15 total playoff plate appearances over a decade-long career is a source of serious introspection and outrage for fans. That’s not good for the sport at all.
I’m not even asking for Mike Trout to win a title or have postseason success. I just want Mike Trout to play in meaningful games — to see his talents displayed in a bigger stage than a mid-September push to earn a wildcard berth.
It’s a shame that, over the years, Clayton Kershaw has had to grapple with the dissonance of being the greatest pitcher of his generation while suffering postseason failures. But at least he’s had those opportunities. Mike Trout’s 3 playoff games were all in 2014.
