"The new BMW i4 is currently competing in retail primarily against the Tesla Model 3 as its most important competitor, while the Polestar 2 from the Chinese Geely Group is a competitor in only a few markets"
BMW continued to with their competitive anaysis
"Audi and Mercedes currently have no offerings in this class of vehicle"
"The Tesla Model 3's driving performance has been praised by the media, as has its handling"
"The cumbersome operation & build quality earn clear criticism"
BMW informs in the internal document that the consumption of the Top Model i4 M50 is 19-24 KWh/100km while the Model 3 Performance has 14kwh/100km
An up to 70% consumption difference, that's huge🙄
The i4 is heavier, slower, less acceleration, and has less range & higher price
Comparing the 'low-cost' Models BMW i40 and the Model 3 SR the statistic looks even more negative for BMW
With a 58KWh Battery 🔋 versus the i4 with 83KWh the hyped BMW BEV has less top speed, a up to 50% higher consumption, is heavier, and has a higher price too
Where BMW obviously tried to stay at par is torque & range for the i40 which is considering the much larger battery, not a win
Even at the prestigious 0-100km/h is the i4 inferior with its top Model
The BMW i4 is losing against Model 3 in all specs for a higher price
BMW expressed they believe to lead in ergonomics and customization
"BMW iDrive with BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8 as a new form of ergonomically perfect driver orientation"
"numerous customization options, e.g. for wheels and colors"
Will that be sufficient?
The BMW charging options sound like an attempt to convince their own sales team
"Extensive charging standard equipment and customized charging solutions from BMW Charging for fast, convenient, and easy charging. Monitoring and control of charging processes via My BMW App."
BMW i4
"Safe use of iPhone apps while driving. Integration of content in Head-Up Display and, new for the i4, Apple Maps ... also support for the Apple voice assistant - new - without pressing the push-to-talk button, simply by activating it with the voice command 'Hey Siri'"
My conclusion
The BMW i4 will not take any market share from Tesla but from other BEVs but the largest part will come from the BMW ICE vehicles
In that respect, the BMW i4 will be a win for the Tesla mission, the 'transition to sustainable transportation'
Finally, the polarising i4 design that received a strong push back in social media may be a challenge to win new customers and keep old ones

"I'm in direct talks with manufacturers like Tesla to get existing infrastructure for example Tesla Superchargers opened up to other manufacturers as well. There are some technical issues to work out but I expect we will come to a solution"
While Tesla for many years offered to share Superchargers with other manufacturers either pride stood in the way or for technical or financial reasons they didn't want to
With many BEVs on Germanys roads open them up to everybody would be a competitive disadvantage
Scheuer wants to have easy customer access over a smartphone like Tesla has and makes pressure on existing charging providers
"Then you can relax and get a real or vegan currywurst while you're charging, and you're on your way"
When the next Porsche BEV Model will come to market?
"We are targeting the first half of 2023"😳
"Then the all-electric Macan will be ready for the road. The well-camouflaged prototypes are now leaving the factory premises for the 1st time"
2 years 🤭
Steiner continued about the next 2023 BEV
"The Macan will indeed be built and developed on the Premium Platform Electric shared with Audi"
Nevertheless, he adds, it will be clearly different from future Audi vehicles. "The Macan will have the soul of a Porsche."
Planned delivery of the next Porsche BEV in 2 years tells us that they either have problems developing a competitive BEV SUV or feel good about continuing selling ICE & making profits with it
In any case, these lazy timelines prove that the pressure is still not high enough
VW initiated a task force to fight against the semiconductor shortage
Head of task force
The situation remains critical in the second quarter and could even worsen. "We are fighting for every vehicle"
VW Head of Chip task force
"The situation will remain tense in the second quarter. Further production adjustments cannot be ruled out"
Hundreds of parts are affected at all car & truck brands
"There are always supply shortages but we've never had a situation like this before"
The chip shortage results in issues much more severe than the market anticipates
The task force involved in purchase chips for their suppliers now and has done 10,000 broker requests to solve bottlenecks but only half of it could be solved
