There seems to be a clot in the Kenyan brain that blocks people from seperating economic problems from education. The #Somenivijana story of going to school for employment was for an exclusive to the colonial civil service and foreign companies. It was not the general economy.
The British caved in to higher education for Africans because it wanted to train a Kenyan civil service that would serve British interests after 1963. That is why uni education got attached to employment. The civil service is a parasitic enterprise. It doesn't grow the economy.
Because the civil service doesn't grow the economy, it soon ran out of employment positions. That was when they 1) said civil servants were allowed to do business and 2) started this evil propaganda of telling Kenyans "rudi mashambani" and stop seeking employment #somenivijana
So when people say "long ago, degrees used to mean something," they are confusing automatic employment with the quality of the degree. What happened long ago is that graduates were guaranteed employment. It has nothing to do with "skills" and such nonsense. #somenivijana
Like when people like @KEPSA_KENYA say the market needs skills, what skills are they talking about? Managerial nanzenz. They want finance, HR, marketing and those parasitic business degrees which produce people for what David Graeber called #bullshitjobs. #somenivijana
Everybody outide #bullshitjobs is given a rough time. From farmers growing potatoes, to beekeepers who are making politicians and KRA salivate like hyenas, all the way to medical workers, techies and digital media, everybody has to suffer the indignity of being exploited.
The tragedy is that business people have access to media. So they keep blaming our economic woes on everybody but themselves who do no work but comment on the work we do. That's why this clot in the Kenyan brain has persisted.
