Yesterday, @marcgarneau convened a meeting about Canada’s National Action Plan on #WomenPeaceSecurity – to make sure we’re following through on commitments, adapting to challenges, & looking ahead.
It was remarkable for many reasons. A thread: 🧵
The head of every National Action Plan partner was there:
The meeting was a frank discussion & exchange among leaders – not a public event.
(The public part is happening too - The government tabled a progress report in Parliament today & will share an independent assessment of the Action Plan when the report is complete.)
“Nothing About Us Without Us”
Four women peacebuilders set the tone for the meeting with direct, incisive briefings.
@FawziaKoofi77, joining from the site of peace talks, described being one of only four women directly negotiating with the Taliban.
@ngowgwps described pushback on women’s rights globally & threats to progress @UN & noted more ways Canada can live up to our strong reputation.
@Ma_Mawi emphasized that #WomenPeaceSecurity is as relevant at home as it is abroad & called on the government to center & connect more Indigenous voices.
@WPSNCanada, co-chair of the Plan’s Advisory Group, gave analysis & recommendations - check out @leclerc_katrina's summary
Regarding our current plan (ending in 2022), ministers discussed ways to ensure we finish strong & deliver fully.
