Nigeria almost happened to a colleague on Wednesday.
His wife went from Abuja to Minna. Her car broke down along kaduna road, at a village where there's no hope of neither getting a mechanic nor get alternative transport. Of course, no one will leave his wife and new infant...
...on the road in these perilous times. So, dude set out from Abuja at 7:20pm to pick his wife and child. Before he could storm through intracity traffic and all, it was late. He eventually got to his wife's location at 9pm.
They secured the faulty car and headed back to Abuja.
In a hilux. Himself, wife & child and the driver who drove the wife to Minna. After a while, he met a police check point and explained his condition to them. They consoled him and he moved on. Less than 500m apart, he met another road block. Men in full military uniforms.
Three of them at first. One of them started a conversation with him about where he's coming from. Like a normal checkpoint. He narrated his ordeal again. In the process, he noticed movements in the nearby bushes and before he could say jack, 5 more emanated from the bush.
At this point, they told him to come down. LUCKILY, he had N20k of N500 denomination with him. Handed it over as well as his phones, wife's and other valuables. They proceeded to the driver with him and he had N400 in his pocket. They started beating him for daring to have a ...
..paltry N400 as old as he is. My colleague started begging them before they harm the guy. The tense atmosphere had however woken up the baby and it started crying. The mother started breastfeeding to quieten the baby but wasn't working. This attracted the assailants' attention
..and somehow they told them to go. Thanking his God, he zoomed off and in less than another 500m, he met a Police checkpoint where he narrated his ordeal to the officers. With so much indifference, one of the officers told him "you better thank God say dem no kidnap you".😲😲
And waved him to move on while he stops the next vehicle.
While we thank God for his family's life, can we ask how long we're gonna continue like this?
