Given the media reports after the SBC annual meeting, I’ve had many ask me about my thoughts concerning a supposed “liberal drift” in the SBC. (thread)
I agree with comments made recently by some SBC leaders that the convention is indeed experiencing a drift— not toward liberalism, but rather toward fundamentalism.
The secular/leftward shift of the culture at large appears to have created a pendulum swing reacting to “errors” that are not materially existent in the SBC— a confessional body where no effort has been made to change the Baptist Faith and Message in over 20 years.
The fundamentalist reaction is claimed to be based on indisputable exegetical foundations from Scripture, but instead seem more like a priori conjectures arising from the misappropriation of what some SBC leaders have said or not said.
This is evidenced in men such as Danny Akin, Al Mohler, Ed Litton, and J.D. Greear, who all insistently and consistently adhere to the BF&M, being labeled by fundamentalists as “theological liberals,” “woke religionists,” and “Marxists.”
Rather than having merit in any real gravitation toward liberalism in the SBC, the fundamentalist reaction appears to be rooted more in fear and/or anger of the mega-shift changes occurring politically, ideologically, and ethnically in our nation.
Challenges to the fundamentalist reaction, even those demonstrating objective/biblical reasoning, are often branded as a cowardly capitulation of bib. truth. What fundamentalists label as “liberal drift” merely seem to be efforts at applying biblical truths to a changing culture.
Fundamentalism for the most part was rejected by messengers at #SBC21, but it’s influence appears to be gaining as the culture is changing.

On wearing masks in church and the ill treatment of your pastor. A thread:
In 30 years of ministry, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything be so divisive in churches like the mask debate now. I’ve spent a good part of this week talking with young pastors being run through the ringer by their church members regarding masks.
I’m getting hammered pretty hard about the issue as well, but I’m now an older guy whose been at his church a long time and in a position to absorb the heat a little better than younger, new pastors. I feel so much for them.
