More than 13,331 companies across the world have signed to the United Nations @globalcompact, a voluntary initiative to implement sustainability principles. - @SafaricomNews
The principles put in print ambitions to make the world a better place by producing and growing wealth in a way that does less damage to the world.
One of these ways is through using cleaner, renewable energy instead of fossil fuels and to create a transformative shift in the way homes, businesses and infrastructure are powered.
According to a recent report titled Statistical Review of World Energy by @bp_plc, the share of renewable sources now stands at about 5% of primary energy. If all non-CO2-emitting sources – renewables, hydro and nuclear – were included, that figure would be at 16%.
The burning of fossil fuels accounts for about 80% of the emissions that cause global warming. And whilst the push for renewable energy certainly has its benefits, there remains a wide range of obstacles in the way of their large-scale development and implementation.
As the world celebrated World Environment Day, the @SafaricomNews sought out Michael Koech who is in charge of Environment and climate change at @SafaricomPLC and Dr. George Njenga the Executive dean of @SBSKenya to discuss the matter.
.@SafaricomPLC is one of the thousands of companies that have signed up to the @unglobalcompact, making it mandatory for it to report, annually, on the extent to which it has gone about fulfilling its promises on sustainability.

Michael and George agree that changing how the energy systems that power and sustain infrastructure and discuss how the telecommunications industry can support the restoration of the environment and the fight against climate change.

A deputy director at @KeRRA_Ke bought the bulk of 35 apartments in the four months to September 2019 when Kenya withdrew the old Sh1,000 banknote to tackle illicit financial flows. - @BD_Africa
The Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) has raised the red flag that the apartments worth Sh374.5 million and Sh94 million in bank accounts linked to Margaret Wanja Muthui were the products of illicit deals, including kickbacks from road contractors.
The ARA successfully applied to court for freeze of the assets with the aim of forfeiting them to the State, arguing that her salary cannot support the purchase of the multimillion-shilling properties within weeks.

Any football fan in Nairobi’s Eastland’s knows that on match days, scaling the City Stadium walls or standing on the Footbridge outside the stadium is one way they have avoided paying for a ticket. - Oscar for @NationAfrica
Every football fan also knows a former player who is languishing in abject poverty having failed to eke out a living for the decades they poured their lives into the game without commensurate pay.
It is hard to connect the dots but when viewers do not pay, talent goes unrewarded, the future of the beautiful game becomes bleak.
