THREAD: Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) under fire for membership at an all-white beach club trib.al/ohhD0v7
Sen. Whitehouse is facing new scrutiny over his decades-long membership in an allegedly all-white private beach club, as he bills himself as a progressive and prominent critic of systemic racism — dismissing membership based on race as “a long tradition in Rhode Island.”
When Whitehouse initially ran for office in 2006, he disavowed his membership and pledged to quit “Bailey’s Beach Club.” Click here to see the new video of a GoLocal reporter confronting him on the issue trib.al/ohhD0v7
Whitehouse’s senior spokeswoman Meaghan McCabe said the country club was not all-white but declined to provide further information or proof. Efforts to reach management at “Bailey’s Beach Club” by phone were unsuccessful.
When asked if such clubs should continue to exist at a time when the country is having a racial reckoning, Sen. Whitehouse replied, “It’s a long tradition in Rhode Island, and there are many of them.”
