India is very rich and diversified in regards of avifauna. It is home to many beautiful and unique endemic bird species. These birds have a great impact on Indian culture. The idea of depicting birds on the postage stamps of India is very old. #stamps#philately#thursdaymorning
The very first bird that appeared on Indian stamps was a postal carrier pigeon, which appeared on the 2-annas and 14- annas stamps of 1 October 1954. This was followed by the 1966 Children’s Day stamp, again depicting a symbolic pigeon, this time representing an apostle of peace.
In later years many other birds like Pitta, Monal, Oriole, Flycatchers, Parakeets, Woodpecker, Pipit, Babbler, Storks, Eagles etc have been depicted on postage stamps in India. Now, more than 100 bird stamps have been issued in India including endemic and migratory birds both.
